Albany Continues Quest to Combat Food Insecurity

Dec 12, 2023 | by Mason Mayer

When The Salvation Army of Albany expressed a shortage of peanut butter in their food pantry, a member of their advisory board quickly answered the call. Food pantries are a vital part of how the Salvation Army serves the local community needs, so a well-stocked supply of goods is a constant priority.

The Salvation Army’s mission is to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs, which it achieves largely through the generous donation of time and resources from volunteers and donors. One of the greatest needs The Salvation Army helps combat is food insecurity, in which local food pantries play a vital role by distributing reliable and nutritious nourishment to those in need.

When The Salvation Army of Albany’s peanut butter stores ran low in the food pantry, there were no locally viable sources to replenish its stock. Captain Chris Thomas reached out to his advisory board for assistance, and board member Patrick Collins responded. Collins, a peanut broker, dramatically exceeded expectations by providing two pallets of peanut butter for the food pantry.

“We were excited about that; to just have one pallet would be more than enough, and then when we arrived there were two whole pallets,” said Captain Chris Thomas.

Peanut butter is a staple item in food pantries, as it is versatile and nutritious. With its numerous vitamins and long shelf life, it is highly effective in satisfying dietary needs.

“Peanut butter goes a long way,” said Captain Thomas, “you can make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, peanut butter crackers, and you can just eat it plain.”

The Salvation Army of Albany is committed to serving their community in many ways, and food provision is a major way they help those in need. Through the help of generous donors like board member Patrick Collins, The Salvation Army’s mission continues on providing help and hope to those in need.
