Former Detroit Tigers player Andy Dirks visited The Salvation Army's Echo Grove Camp today, speaking to about 200 youth about the importance of discovering their own identity and purpose in life. Dirks, now 39 and an on‑air host for Tigers broadcasts, encouraged campers not to be overly influenced by social media, emphasizing the importance of knowing and accepting themselves.

Located roughly 45 minutes north of Detroit, Echo Grove provides kids a space to learn about God and reflect on their personal uniqueness. Dirks, who regularly engages in men’s ministry, emphasized how youth‑focused outreach is especially meaningful to him as a father of four boys.

“It’s important for kids to hear from someone who's been successful in life, to let them know that no matter where they come from or what their skills are, they matter and have tremendous purpose,” Dirks said.

He addressed common misconceptions about young people, noting that the current generation often receives undeserved criticism.

“I think sometimes the younger generation gets a bad rap,” he remarked. “Every generation thinks they're better, but I see a lot of respectful and thoughtful kids here.”

Dirks expressed hope that by sharing experiences, adults can guide youth to avoid common mistakes. He encouraged campers to find something within themselves that remains strong, even during life’s challenges.

“The sooner they recognize what makes them unique,” Dirks concluded, “the more they’ll have something solid to hold onto when things get difficult.”
