Cold weather shelters opening ahead of arctic blast

Several cold weather shelters on the Coast kept people warm Monday night, and now the shelters prepare for another night of freezing weather.

GULF COAST, Miss. (WLOX) - Cold weather shelters are opening up along the Coast Monday night.

Hancock County:

Hancock County announced it will open its shelter at the Emergency Operations Center Building at 18333 HWY 603 in the Kiln.

The shelter will open at 7 p.m. tonight to 8 a.m. Tuesday.

It will open each night through Thursday.

People who need a ride to the shelter can call Hancock Central Dispatch at 228-255-9191.

Cold weather shelters are also opening up in Pearl River County:

Pear River County:

Pearl River County is opening all three of its community saferooms.

Opens at 4 p.m.
Will remain open 24/7 through Thursday
Carrier Community Saferoom
7341 Highway 11
Open 4 p.m. - 7 a.m. through Wednesday
Picayune Community Saferoom
501 Laurel Street
Open 4 p.m. - 7 a.m. through Wednesday

Pets are not allowed at the above locations.

You are asked to bring food, water, and other necessary items to the shelter.

George County:

Go Church in Lucedale is opening its doors for those in need.

It will open its shelter Tuesday, January 16 from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.

Harrison County:

The Kenny Fournier Multipurpose Center will open Monday at 4:30 p.m. at 10395 Automall Parkway.

It will remain open through Thursday.

Coast Transit Authority (CTA) will provide transportation to the D’Iberville shelter

In Gulfport, the Salvation Army Center of Hope Shelter will open at 6 p.m. Monday night and Tuesday night.

It’s located at 2019 22nd Street.
