Divisional Leadership Visits Disaster Relief Efforts in Shawnee, Oklahoma

Apr 24, 2023 | by Chris Johnson

Shawnee, Oklahoma - On Monday, The Salvation Army's Arkansas & Oklahoma Divisional Commander Lt. Col. Dean Hinson as well as General Secretary Captain Scott Hoover visited the disaster relief efforts taking place in Shawnee, Oklahoma after a tornado devastated many parts of the community. The leadership team wanted to not only get a first-hand account of the work that was taking place, but also lend a helping hand in the service delivery that The Salvation Army does in times of disaster. The two worked alongside a team that has been working around the clock since arriving on site after the tornado touched down last week, serving hot meals and cold drinks, and offering prayer and words of encouragement to those who came to The Salvation Army seeking assistance.

"We thank the Lord for the tremendous work that is happening in Shawnee, and a community that has come together to help their neighbors during their time of greatest need," said Lt. Col. Dean Hinson, Divisional Commander.

Captain Scott Hoover also expressed his gratitude for the community's support during this difficult time, stating that "It's an honor for The Salvation Army to be able to deliver these meals to the doorsteps of families and individuals who cannot physically get to us. And we are especially grateful for Amy Price, Salvation Army of Shawnee Advisory Board Chair, who despite her business being without power has allowed The Salvation Army to utilize her business' parking lot to set up a stationary canteen to help meet the needs of those who pass by and see the iconic Salvation Army Shield, representing hope for those who are feeling hopeless."

Lt. Col. Hinson also expressed his gratitude to the team that has been working tirelessly since arriving on site after the tornado. "I want to thank each and every volunteer for your hard work and dedication in ensuring that the needs of the community are being met, and a special word of appreciation to Captains Patrick and Stacey Connelly (Corps Officers for The Salvation Army of Shawnee). Your selfless service is a true reflection of the mission of The Salvation Army, and I am honored to work alongside such a dedicated team." The Salvation Army remains committed to providing support and assistance to those impacted by disasters, and will continue to work closely with the community in Shawnee to help them on their road to recovery.
