The Salvation Army of Oklahoma Announces 2024 Youth of the Year

Feb 21, 2024 | by Cindy Fuller

Isiah Jackson, a 15-year-old from Lawton, Oklahoma, representing The Salvation Army’s Lawton Boys & Girls Club, was named Youth of the Year on Saturday, February 17th.

Chosen from a pool of five exceptional candidates, Isiah was awarded a college scholarship as The Salvation Army’s Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year. This prestigious title recognizes outstanding young individuals for their leadership, service, academic achievements, and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Isiah's next challenge awaits at the State Title competition, where he will compete against representatives from other Boys & Girls Clubs of America chapters not affiliated with The Salvation Army.

With roots dating back to 1865 and 1860 respectively, The Salvation Army and The Boys & Girls Clubs of America have long histories of providing vital programming to at-risk youth. Their partnership, spanning over 50 years, underscores their shared commitment to positively impacting children and their families.

In his essay and speech, Isiah reflects on how his journey at the Lawton Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club has shaped some of his most defining moments in high school. Initially, he joined the club as a means to fulfill community service requirements and complete homework assignments. At the time, he was struggling to find his place and wasn't performing well academically. Today, Isiah has transformed his life. He excels in school, showcases his musical talents by playing the piano and drums, and serves as a role model for younger club members.

Through participation in Boys & Girls Club programs such as Triple Play, Power Hour, and Smart Moves, Isiah found invaluable support and guidance that became pivotal in his personal and academic growth.

"Isiah embodies the essence of an exceptional teenager, driven by strong morals and an unwavering determination to succeed," remarks Captain Chris Doborwicz, Divisional Youth Secretary for The Salvation Army's Arkansas-Oklahoma Division. "His journey is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of support from both staff and peers at the Boys & Girls Club. He stands as a shining example of how the seeds of great futures are sown right here."
