Building Bridges with Words: The Salvation Army’s ESL Classes in Hancock County
In the heart of Hancock County, The Salvation Army has discovered a vital need within the community: English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. This initiative has blossomed into a thriving program that not only teaches English but also fosters a sense of community among its participants.
"I didn’t realize there was such a great need for an ESL class in Bay St. Louis," said Maurice Singleton, an ESL instructor. "I spoke with The Peoples Bank branch manager, who told me about a student who was looking for someone to help him sharpen his speaking and writing skills."
Seeing this need, Maurice took action. "For nine months, I held a two-hour class every Monday evening. We started with five students and grew to twelve in about four months," he shared.
The growth of the class speaks volumes about the dedication and motivation of the students. "The students are very motivated to improve their speaking skills. They work extremely hard, and they support and encourage each other," Maurice said. This supportive environment has been crucial in helping students build confidence and proficiency in English.
One of the unique aspects of the class is the tradition of sharing meals. "Every Monday night, one of the students brings dinner for the entire class. It’s a great way to celebrate their cultures and their growing language skills," Maurice explained. This tradition not only enriches the learning experience but also strengthens the bonds among the students.
The diversity of the class is another highlight, with students hailing from Mexico, Venezuela, Honduras, and Nicaragua. This multicultural mix enriches the learning environment and provides students with a broader perspective.
The Salvation Army's ESL program in Hancock County is more than just a language class; it's a community. It’s a place where individuals from different backgrounds come together to learn, support one another, and celebrate their cultures. The success of this program underscores the importance of providing educational resources to help all community members thrive.
