We equip youth for today and empower them for life.

youth services

Youth of all ages come through our doors. Some want to learn a new skill after school rather than go home to an empty house. Some need an adequate dinner or help with homework. Others just want to have a conversation with someone who is willing to lend an ear. No matter the need – educational, physical, emotional or spiritual – we see each child’s potential in life and help them see hope for a bright future through our youth services.

The Salvation Army operates more than 400 after-school programs nationwide.

By offering after-school programs, summer school programs, free summer camps, and summer programs for high school students, we provide a safe place for children living in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods to learn, play, and connect. Perhaps most importantly, each extracurricular after-school program provides a supervised opportunity for children of all ages to broaden their interests, abilities, and aspirations.

How we help empower youth

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS
Youth from all walks of life face obstacles. But those who grow and learn in structured activities and have supervision are less likely to succumb to risky behaviors. Most Salvation Army locations offer after-school programs to engage youth to learn new skills and gain confidence through tutoring. Several locations provide Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club programming.

CHARACTER BUILDING PROGRAMS
Character building starts young and helps determine who a child will become in life. Girls can attend Moonbeams (preschool to Kindergarten), Sunbeams (first through fifth grades) and Girl Guards (sixth through 12 grades). Boys can attend Adventure Corps Explorers (first through fourth grades) and Rangers (fifth through eighth grades). All of these programs develop a youth’s unique individuality and personal strengths based on Biblical principles.

MUSIC & ARTS

Students ages 7-16 receive weekly fine arts instruction, theory education, and have time for group work and individual practice in their instrument of choice. Brass students learn to play in a brass band and gain exposure to various styles from jazz to pop to sacred. All students practice pieces for the end-of-semester recitals, giving vital performance and group collaboration experience. All students benefit from mentoring, critical feedback, and self-reflection as they grow in fine arts. Students learn critical thinking skills, use their imagination, and self-discovery.

The music program takes place in The Salvation Army Savannah Community Center, located at 3000 Bee Road in Savannah. The Community Center has dedicated space for music classrooms and storage of instruments. Michael Downum, a full-time Salvation Army employee, plans, manages, and directs the music program. He works with lead personnel to design the class curriculum and activities for the various fine arts and select final recital pieces. Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts from Pfeiffer University and a Master of Arts in Worship and Studies from the Robert E. Webber Institute for Worship Studies. He has been a private instructor, orchestral, band, and chamber musician and has volunteered for the NSC divisional Music and Arts program from October 2017 to April 2022.

Please contact Michael Downum at michael.downum@uss.salvationarmy.org today for more information and to register for the music school.

CAMP GRANDVIEW
Located at the foot of Sharptop Mountain in scenic Jasper, Georgia, The Salvation Army’s Camp Grandview is a traditional summer camp program providing the rich experience of camping in the context of a Christian community.

Hundreds of boys and girls, ages 7 to 16 come to Camp Grandview each summer, most in one week increments, to play together, learn from each other, and grow in their relationships with Christ and others. Campers live in cabins with kids in their same school grade and participate in a broad range of camp activities, from athletics to arts and everything in between.

Camp Grandview seeks to nurture physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually under the guidance and direction of college-age counselors who have been selected on the basis of their ability to lead, love, guide, and care for campers.

SUMMER DAY CAMP
The Salvation Army Summer Day Camp provides youth aged 5-14 with a safe, structured and enjoyable environment to go during the summer months. While running, jumping and playing, kids will meet new friends, have fun and learn about God through Bible studies and Vacation Bible School programs.
Contact your local Salvation Army Center for details about their specific Summer Day Camp program.
