Camp Hoblitzelle Holds First Film Conservatory Camp
Students taking part in first ever Camp Hoblitzelle Film Conservatory utilize the sets, prop room, sound stages and dressing rooms of The Chosen TV series
Forty young Texans had the opportunity to have hands-on experience on a working film production site during July’s first ever Camp Hoblitzelle Film Conservatory. The conservatory provided classes taught by industry professionals to the aspiring filmmakers.
Inspired by the relationship between the popular multi-season television series “The Chosen” and Camp Hoblitzelle, the sessions covered all the main aspects of filmmaking including cinematography, production, directing, design, and acting. Camp Hoblitzelle, which serves as the host location for the show, is owned and operated in Midlothian by The Salvation Army.
Using the short film model, campers learned to work together as a team to bring their stories to life under the expert guidance of working industry professionals from The Chosen, Out of Order Studios, Jason Hildebrand Creative Arts, and Tough Draw Productions.
“The first couple of days at camp were amazing!” said Josiah. “We learned so much about the process of film-making, the jobs on a film set, and really putting together the pieces of what it takes to make any sort of film.”
Students took part in “Reel Talks,” special daily times of connection between campers and staff that included encouragement and sharing through biblical-based principles and prayer.
“I learned that to be in the film industry or theater and production you need to be on time, be productive, do your work and do it well,” said Abby. “That’s just a great rule of thumb for anywhere in life.”
“It’s been amazing to connect the dots and realize that stories and people are everything,” said Josiah. “People love movies. It’s an escape for them. We can use that to really change their lives – to show them and introduce a freedom, a truth, a hope through Jesus they’ve never realized before.”
“The Chosen,” the highest crowd-funded project of all time, is based on the life of Jesus. It has been translated into 50 languages.
