Memorial Food Drive Celebrates 25 Years

Nov 8, 2022

The Bob Skaggs Memorial Food Drive in Grayson County – going strong for more than 25 years – had an overwhelming response in 2021, almost doubling the food collected from the previous year. And more than $3,000 also was donated at the 2021 event.

Bob Skaggs was such a regular at the food drive, the event was eventually named after him. Every January, he planned vacation time so he could volunteer for the fall event. “He would go down there every year to volunteer!” said his daughter Wendy Velloti. “He had been involved every year for seven consecutive years when he tragically died as a result of a car accident.”

Now a three-day collection of non-perishable food items and toiletries, the food drive is a community tradition and is the largest of its kind in the county.

“It is very humbling to see the food drive and Dad’s legacy continue to grow each year,” said Velotti. “People are competitive — they always want to beat last year’s totals!”

“The Salvation Army is so grateful for the ongoing support of the Bob Skaggs Memorial Food Drive and its sponsors,” said Lt. Amanda Cain, Commanding Officer at The Salvation Army of Grayson County. “The food we receive stocks our pantry for months, helping people throughout the year. We’re so thankful for the generosity of our community!”
