The Salvation Army Responding After Catastrophic Flooding in Central Texas

Jul 6, 2025

Dallas, Texas (July 5, 2025) – The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team in Kerrville, Texas are actively responding to widespread flooding that impacted Kerr County on July 4th. More than 10 inches of rain fell in less than 12 hours resulting in the Guadelupe River overflowing causing catastrophic flooding affecting numerous neighborhoods, flooding homes, businesses and forcing road closures.

The Salvation Army deployed a mobile kitchen and team early on Thursday morning at the request of local emergency management and the Police Department.

“We staged in the Walmart parking lot where a temporary reunification center was set up for those evacuating from the flooding. Our team provided water, hot drinks and snacks and have been talking with and praying with those coming to the center,” said Major Phil Swyers, with The Salvation Army in Kerrville. “The community was waking to celebrate the July 4th holiday and has suddenly been faced with historic and tragic flooding. The Salvation Army is here to help and will support those impacted by this disaster.”

Coordinating with local emergency management, law enforcement, and partner agencies The Salvation Army team continued to provide support throughout the night. Search and rescue is continuing throughout the county and The Salvation Army is there with meals, drinks, and Emotional and Spiritual Care.

More than 950 meals and snacks were served on Thursday along with 6,800 drinks. The Salvation Army is grateful for the practical support of community partners including Walmart, McDonalds, GrapeJuice of Kerrville, Scooters Coffee, and the Texas Fire Walkers group. The Salvation Army is also distributing blankets and has made clothing and towels available to impacted individuals and families from the Thrift Store. Additional supplies including cleanup kits, food boxes, and shower and laundry trailers will arrive on Friday as response continues.

Additional Salvation Army units are on the way to Kerr County with a second mobile kitchen and Rapid Response Unit (a modified pick-up truck) deploying from San Antonio, on Friday. Other counties have been impacted by flooding and The Salvation Army is also responding to community needs in San Angelo, where the shelter has been made available for overflow evacuations. The local mobile kitchen has deployed along with an additional unit from Big Lake and volunteers from Abilene.

The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Service team is in communications with the State Operation Center and will continue to monitor the situation and are ready to provide additional support as requested.

“We are praying for our hurting community, and especially those who have tragically lost loved ones,” said Swyers. “The Salvation Army will continue to serve those impacted in the days ahead.”
