Mission Essential Support Needed to Prevent Hunger
and Homelessness Across Central & Eastern Kentucky

Why This Campaign Matters

1 in 6

Kentuckians faces food insecurity

1 in 5

Children in Kentucky struggles with hunger

Limited

Many rural counties we serve have limited food access and transportation

Lower Cost

Preventing homelessness costs far less and causes less trauma than re-housing a family after eviction

Our Mission Is Essential - And At Risk

For individuals and families facing crisis, one unexpected hardship can quickly become hunger or homelessness.

The Mission Essential Campaign focuses on early intervention - strengthening the services that stabilize families before situations escalate. By investing now, donors help address immediate needs while protecting long-term stability and dignity.

Between June and November 2026, The Salvation Army of Richmond is seeking $250,000 to protect access to essential services across our service area.

HELP REACH THE $250,000 GOAL

How Your Gift Saves Services

Case Management Services

$65,000

What this supports:
Currently, there is no dedicated case manager serving clients in crisis. Funding will allow us to hire a case manager to:

  • Support individuals during emergencies
  • Connect clients to housing, employment, and benefits
  • Reduce repeat crises through personalized support

Emergency Rental Assistance

$105,000

What this supports:
A missed rent payment can quickly lead to homelessness — and resources are limited. This funding will:

  • Help 45–50 families remain safely housed
  • Prevent eviction before displacement occurs
  • Reduce trauma and long-term community costs
It is more cost-effective — and more compassionate — to keep families housed than to rehouse them after homelessness.

Expanded Food Assistance

$80,000

What this supports:
Food insecurity affects families across Madison, Estill, Jackson, Rockcastle, Lee, Wolfe, Breathitt, Clay, and Owsley counties. Funding will:

  • Serve 1,200 additional people
  • Reach approximately 300 people every three months
  • Expand food boxes, mobile pantry services, and access to fresh, perishable foods like meat and produce

Stories of Impact

Tiffany

Tiffany first turned to The Salvation Army during a difficult season when her family was struggling to cover rent and provide Christmas for their children. Through the Angel Tree program, that moment of need became the beginning of ongoing support that included food assistance, budgeting classes, and consistent case management follow‑up. Over time, her family gained stability, confidence, and hope for the future. Today, they are financially secure and looking ahead to a time when they can give back to help others.

KATIE

Katie has always worked hard to provide for her family, but after becoming a single mother of four, even long hours as a CNA were not enough to cover rising costs. As her family faced food insecurity, income disruptions during the pandemic, and the threat of eviction, The Salvation Army provided food assistance and direct support that helped keep them safely housed. That stability allowed Katie to weather a difficult season without her family becoming homeless. Today, she continues working, relies on food programs to stretch her budget, and is building a new normal with hope for the future.
