OUR AREAS OF FOCUS

Christmas Assistance | Angel Tree

The WBRC Fox 6 Gifts for Kids Salvation Army Angel Tree

The WBRC Fox 6 Gifts for Kids Birmingham Salvation Army Angel Tree program was established in 2007 and provides Christmas gifts to children and families in Central Alabama.  Each year, thousands of children will have their Christmas wishlists come true, thanks to the generosity of individual, corporate, and business donors in our community.

For more information, please call 205-328-2420

The History of WBRC Fox 6 News Gifts for Kids

In 1998, WBRC teamed up with the Department of Human Resources to help collect toys for foster children in Jefferson County. Since then, the WBRC FOX6 News Gifts for Kids program has expanded to include several counties in and around Birmingham., providing toys to tens of thousands of foster children in the Birmingham metro area.

The History of The Salvation Army Angel Tree

Along with the familiar Red Kettles, the Angel Tree program is one of The Salvation Army's highest-profile Christmas efforts. Angel Tree was created by The Salvation Army in 1979 by Majors Charles and Shirley White when they worked with a Lynchburg, Virginia shopping mall to provide clothing and toys for children at Christmas time.

The program got its name because the Whites identified the wishes of local children by writing their gift needs on Hallmark greeting cards that featured pictures of angels. They placed the cards on a Christmas tree at the mall to allow shoppers to select children to help. Thanks to the Whites, who were assigned by The Army to the Lynchburg area at the time, more than 700 children had a brighter Christmas that first year.

Three years later, when the Whites were transferred to Nashville, Tennessee, Angel Tree was launched in the Music City. WSM radio, which airs the Grand Ol' Opry, came on board that year as the first Angel Tree co-sponsor in the U.S.

Because of the on-air promotion on WSM in Nashville, as well as national publicity on CNN and the Larry King Show, news of Angel Tree spread across the country like wildfire.

In 1998, WBRC teamed up with the Department of Human Resources to help collect toys for foster children in Jefferson County. In 2007, WBRC partnered with The Salvation Army and the WBRC FOX 6 Gifts For Kids Salvation Army Angel Tree program was created. The program includes Angel Trees in local shopping malls and on-site at area corporations, churches, and organizations. The local communities have fully supported the Angel Tree program, making it possible to help thousands of children each year.

Courses are designed with adult learners in mind that emphasize group interaction and cooperative learning. Training courses include classes in incident management, canteen operations, food service, emotional and spiritual care as well as basic first aid and CPR training.

Disaster training courses are rated according to difficulty; the higher the difficulty level, the more complex the knowledge presented. Certain courses may also require prerequisite classes.

Biography

Majors Robert and Karen Lyle were appointed to lead The Greater Birmingham Area Command in June of 2021. Major Robert Lyle grew up in Paris, Texas, and was introduced to The Salvation Army through an act of kindness when The Salvation Army volunteers delivered a food box to his home. Major Robert said it was this type of “ministry” that inspires his lifetime commitment to serving others. “I do now, what was done for me as a kid,” said Major Robert Lyle. Major Karen Lyle was born and raised in the port town of Oswego, New York, and is the sixth of seven siblings.

Major Karen is an avid student of the Word and committed to fulfilling a promise she made to the Lord more than 30 years ago. Major Robert Lyle serves The Greater Birmingham Area Command alongside his wife of 34 years, Major Karen Lyle. The Majors have served The Salvation Army for 35 years, and willingly and dutifully have accepted appointments in cities such as Baltimore and Hagerstown, Maryland, and most recently Jackson, Mississippi. Birmingham makes the 10th appointment for Majors Robert and Karen Lyle. In addition to serving as Area Commanders, the Majors also serve as pastors of the Alabaster Community Corps Church. “My greatest reward is seeing souls come to Christ,” said Major Robert Lyle. Major Robert Lyle said his goal is to continue to grow the Bessemer Corps/Bessemer Salvation Station, The Center of Hope, and provide resources for people to come in and experience the love of God. “I would rather see a sermon lived than preached every day,” said Major Robert Lyle.

Majors Robert and Karen Lyle possess Bachelor of Arts in Christian Leadership and Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership. Major Robert Lyle has also completed a Master of Divinity. They are the parents of two sons, Josh (Jordan) and Caleb (Kristen), and grandparents to four beautiful grandchildren, Lilly (6), Noah (4) Micah (2), and baby Ellie.

The Greater Birmingham Area Command

In 1899, The Salvation Army was established in Birmingham, Alabama, one year after the first steel mill opened.  Spearheading the first efforts in the city were two female officers, Captain Houchin and Lt. Phillips.  They were initially met with indifference, but that didn’t stop them.  They set up a central location at 510 North 15th Street.  In less than four years, the women opened two additional Corps in Ensley and Bessemer.

In 1967, a new facility was built at 2130 11th Avenue North which served the community well for over 50 years.  But, due to the growing needs of the community, The Salvation Army built the beautiful Center of Hope on 2015 26th Avenue North in 2017.  The Center of Hope is a 4.1-acre campus consisting of four interconnected buildings totaling 110,000 square feet. The program and services housed at the New Center of Hope offer solutions to some of the biggest societal issues and challenges faced today by families, youth, our neighborhoods, and our city – problems such as poverty, homelessness, and education.

The new Center of Hope campus was designed around the complete restoration of Lewis Elementary School, which was originally built in 1928. The complex includes three new additional buildings that house a 200-seat capacity dining hall, a two-story men’s residential building, and a three-story residential building for women and children. The campus was designed by the architectural firm, LIVE Design Group, and the construction was managed by Brasfield & Gorrie.

What is 614?

To learn more about the 614 Corps, please click the link, https://youtu.be/iS5zCWE3tI0, or email 614birmingham@gmail.com.

614 is a network of incarnational faith communities in urban centers in several countries, who are committed to a shared vision: Rebuild, Restore, Renew (Isaiah 61:4) and a shared mission: Plans, Hope, Future (Jeremiah 29:11). We encourage, support, and resource each other as much as possible believing that we are better together.

The following six “principles” comprise a framework to help define 614.

  1. Vision: Rebuild, Restore, Renew: “They will rebuild the ancient ruins and restore the places long devastated; they will renew the ruined cities that have been devastated for generations.” (Isaiah 61:4)
  2. Mission: Plans, Hope, Future: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
  3. Essentials:
    Worship with commitment and integrity
    Transformational prayer
    Preaching for all by all
    Radical discipleship
    Redemptive theology of salvation
    Holistic mission of redemption
    Prophetic engagement with culture
    Passionate pursuit of justice
    Commitment to lifestyle simplicity
    Incarnational community life
    Affirmation of all peoples equally
    Rooted in mission not maintenance
  4. Incarnational Ministry: 614 is predicated on relational ministry and therefore is incarnational in form and function. We “live our lives” alongside and among those whom God has called us to, following the example of Jesus: “The Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood.” (John 1:14)
  5. Faith Communities amongst the Urban Marginalized: 614 are faith communities intentionally among, with, and by the poor and marginalized – the last, the lost, the least – primarily in urban neighborhoods.
  6. Mutual Accountability: Each 614 is in relationship with other communities of the 614 network. This includes intentional cross-resourcing, open communication, sharing of information and plans, and mutual accountability.

Gift of Stock Donations

Donations of stock can be a benefit to you as well as to The Salvation Army.

An outright gift of long-term securities (owned more than one year) to The Salvation Army is free of capital gains tax, no matter how much their value may have risen. Therefore, it is better to donate appreciated long-term stock outright than to sell it yourself and then donate the money to charity, in which case you would be responsible for the capital gains tax. A gift of stock also allows you to remove the appreciated asset from your taxable estate.

When you make a gift of long-term appreciated stock, you can deduct the full fair market value of the gift from your taxable income when itemizing deductions in the year you make the gift as long as it does not exceed 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. In addition, you may “carryover” and deduct any remaining amount during the next five years, as long as it does not exceed 30 percent of your adjusted gross income in the year of deduction.

You can take pleasure in knowing that your generous gift provides immediate support for the programs and work of The Salvation Army.

To make a stock gift or for more information, please contact:

Emergency Housing

The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham is the only shelter in Central Alabama, serving men, women, children, families, and veterans at one location, The Center of Hope. We offer emergency services that include food, shelter, clothing, and counseling. If you are experiencing homelessness, and need immediate help, please call 205.328.2420 or come to The Salvation Army Social Services Building, located at 2015 26th Avenue North Birmingham, AL 35234, for assistance.

My Home Program

The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham’s My Home Program provides support to families, Veterans, and Human Trafficking survivors experiencing homelessness.  The case-intensive program works to transition participants out of the Shelter program, and into permanent housing of their own. The My Home Program is designed to prevent generational poverty, and encourages career and educational advancement amongst program participants.

The My Home Program also combats generational poverty by investing in supportive resources that develop children in the program. The program also assists with childcare, afterschool, extracurricular, and Pre-K expenses.

For more information, please call 205-328-2420.

Pathway of Hope

Pathway of Hope provides client-centered services to families, designed to break generational poverty and create a path towards success. The program centers on case management and identifying an individual client’s needs, skills, and strengths.  Pathway of Hope was developed to impact the multigenerational effects of poverty. The lives of parents, children, and families are positively impacted at The Center of Hope by providing stable and safe housing, and providing educational, career, and life skills programs that support self-sufficiency.  My Home participants will transition out of the shelter system and into permanent housing upon successful completion of the program.

The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope initiative marks a pivotal shift to focusing on the core causes of poverty rather than treating the symptoms. Lack of job opportunities, unstable housing, and an underserved educational environment can all be major challenges for someone looking to lead a self-sustainable life.

For more information, please call 205-328-2420.

Veteran’s services include case management and the coordination of medical, mental health, substance abuse recovery, education and workforce development, housing placement, and other resources.

The 90-day program serves up to 10 Veterans and provides meals and living essentials.  Veterans also participate in social and leisure activities, work out in their own fitness center, watch movies, play games in the Veteran’s Lounge, and enjoy weekly outings.

The Veterans Bridge Program provides supportive resources and services to Veterans seeking to transition into a permanent home of their own.  If you would like more information, please contact 205-328-2420.

CURE HUNGER

The Salvation Army Greater Birmingham Area Command hosts food pantries in three areas to combat hunger and food insecurity in our area. By supplying free fresh produce, canned goods, and healthy frozen items, our food pantries provide valuable meal supplementation while helping those in need maintain their independence and dignity. These food pantries are especially crucial in “food deserts,” where entire communities experience food insecurity due to a lack of grocery store access.

EDUCATION AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

The Education and Workforce Development Center offers professional and personal development classes designed to help attendees reach their full potential.

The mission of The Salvation Army Education and Workforce Development Center is to provide quality, innovative, education and training activities that exceed the needs of our students through cross-agency partnerships; that will help them achieve their long-term employment goals and financial self-sufficiency. We are focused on building a pipeline of qualified participants who can fill Birmingham’s entry-level jobs. The Education & Workforce Development Center is open to Salvation Army clients and members of the Birmingham community.

The Education & Workforce Development Center provides a range of administrative, counseling, and supportive services through its partners and partnering agencies. Workforce Development is important for the success and development of work and life management skills. Workforce Development is at the heart of The Salvation Army’s Center of Hope. Not only are we dedicated to developing great employees, but we are also dedicated to developing individuals who can sustain employment not only through job readiness preparedness but also life skills and educational training.  There are a variety of training programs available. Programs include education and workforce assessments, education and career counseling, basic life skills training, pre-GED and literacy assessments, GED courses with a diploma option, vocational training, certification opportunities, job placement, and associate degree programs.

We are currently looking for partners in the community whose mission and goals align with the mission of the Education & Workforce Development Center.  Our facility has seven fully-equipped classrooms available for use by partners willing to bring their programs to our site. We are looking for organizations and companies that offer educational courses to partner with as we continue to develop our education and workforce development curriculum.

If you are interested in partnering, class offerings, or job skill training, please contact Shanavia Moore at 205.328.2420 or Shanavia.Moore@uss.SalvationArmy.org

Emergency Disaster Services

When disaster strikes, Hope is on the Way. The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham’s disaster response teams deploy to any disaster that places a community or its people at risk, or that may disrupt or destroy family security or well-being. We are often the first to arrive and the last to leave a crisis situation, serving tirelessly alongside first responders, agencies, and members of the community.

The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham’s EDS Fleet consists of The Canteen, The Rapid Response Unit (RRU), The EDS 4×4 F250, and a portable meal trailer.   The EDS teams consist of Salvation Army Officers, employees, and volunteers.

THE SALVATION ARMY HELPS MEET THE NEEDS OF DISASTER SURVIVORS THROUGH:

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

As one of the largest disaster relief organizations in the country, The Salvation Army recognizes the need to be prepared. We provide education on how to prepare for and respond to disasters and aid in the development of emergency disaster plans.

IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Natural disasters strike without much warning, so The Salvation Army is ready to jump into action on short notice. We gather donations, resources, and volunteers in a predetermined staging area so we’re ready to help as soon as the federal, state, or local government declares the area safe to enter. Our disaster assistance includes providing food, water, and shelter to survivors, lending a hand with cleanup, and putting people in touch with loved ones.

LONG-TERM DISASTER RECOVERY

The Salvation Army continues to aid survivors of natural disasters throughout the recovery process. We collaborate with local, state, and federal governments to develop and execute a long-term disaster relief and recovery plan, including restoration and rebuilding initiatives, meeting basic needs, covering medical expenses, cutting funeral costs, and distributing in-kind donations to help survivors rebuild their lives.

EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL CARE

Not all aftermath of disasters is visible to the naked eye. The Salvation Army helps address the emotional impact on disaster survivors and first responders with emotional support and spiritual comfort. Whether it’s lending a listening ear, offering a hug, joining together in prayer, or simply being present, Salvation Army personnel are ready to help.
