Be Ready Before Disaster Strikes

Natural disasters can happen anytime. Protect your family with a disaster preparedness kit and learn how The Salvation Army helps communities prepare, respond, and recover.

Why Preparedness Matters

Every year, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, wildfires, and other disasters cause billions in damage and put families at risk. In 2021 alone, the U.S. experienced over $145 billion in disaster losses (climate.gov).

When disaster hits, knowing your next step can save lives. With the right planning, supplies, and support, you and your family can face emergencies with confidence.

Stay Safe: Steps to Be Prepared

1. Stay Informed:

Keep an eye on local weather forecasts and warnings from trusted sources like NOAA. Sign up for emergency alerts from your community to receive timely updates. Stay updated with the latest information from The Salvation Army by following us on Facebook here.

2. Create a Safety Plan:

Identify the safest place in your home or building—ideally, a basement or storm cellar. If that's not available, choose an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor, without windows. Ensure everyone in your household knows the plan!

3. Prepare an Emergency Kit:

Stock up on essentials such as water, non-perishable food, flashlights, extra batteries, a first aid kit, medications, and important documents. Ensure all of your phones, electronics, and any external batteries are charged ahead of time in case of a power outage. For more details, please visit our Emergency Disaster Services page.

Here is a good list to get started:

  • 3-5 days of water & non-perishable food per person
  • First aid kit & medicines
  • Flashlights, batteries, and a NOAA Weather Radio
  • Extra battery banks for phones and electronics
  • Extra clothing, blankets, and hygiene items
  • Important documents in waterproof storage
  • Supplies for infants, elderly family, and pets

4. Make a Family Communication Plan:

Designate a meeting spot in case you get separated. Make sure everyone knows how to reach each other and has a contact outside the area to relay messages. Additionally, make sure someone is responsible for the safety of your pets, including having a plan for their evacuation if necessary.

5. Know Your Evacuation Plan:

If local authorities issue an evacuation order, know your evacuation routes and have a "go-bag" ready with essentials. You can find more information about evacuations here.
