Felix Casas:
Volunteer
of the Year

After dedicating 43 years to a career with American Airlines, Felix retired in 2012. Retirement, as it turned out, marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life. With a strong desire to serve his community, Felix volunteered with various organizations throughout the city, from El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank to the Rainbow Borderland Center. His commitment to giving back extends far and wide.

Felix's journey with The Salvation Army began with an introduction to Brenda Sanchez, the Volunteer Coordinator. Inspired by her guidance and passion, Felix decided to join the mission and dedicate his time and effort to alleviating hunger within the community.

Today, Felix is a vital force in The Salvation Army's mission, assembling food boxes destined for families in need and preparing sack lunches for various projects. This hands-on work allows him to make a direct and immediate impact in the fight against hunger.

“I prepare 15 food boxes in the morning, but they’re gone in 24 hours,” says Felix. “It’s a reminder that the fight against hunger is an ongoing challenge, but I know we’re making an impact.”

Felix has volunteered 249 hours since May 2022. His unwavering dedication has not gone unnoticed, and during National Salvation Army Week in May 2023, he was presented with the Volunteer of the Year award. Felix’s story is a testament to the power of community.
