History of The Songbird Cafe & The Gameday Cafe

The Songbird Café’ began with an idea or “vision” that came from Jimmy Stevenson, of Southern Way Catering and Ricky Wright, formerly with Hootie and the Blowfish. The two of them envisioned a quaint evening of entertainment centered around a singer, songwriter style event.

Stevenson and Wright drew inspiration from the world-renowned Bluebird Café, a 90-seat venue, located in a small strip mall outside of downtown Nashville. The Bluebird’s stage has been graced by legends such as, Garth Brooks, Keith Urban, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kris Kristofferson, Carole King, Faith Hill, Vince Gill, Taylor Swift, and many more.

After research, many discussions, and a lot of determination, The Songbird Café went from a vision to a reality in October of 2001 with the first live performance featuring Mark Bryan, Patrick Davis, and Edwin McCain. From there it was history!

Over two decades later, October 2025 will mark the 23rd annual Songbird Café Event; An event that has been filled with the soulful tunes and heartfelt lyrics of artists like Darius Rucker, Kevn Kenny, Ed Roland, Edwin McCain, Hobart Trotter, Glenn Phillips, Tift Merritt, Radney Foster, Don Dixon, Ken Block & Andrew Copeland, Patrick Davis, Emerson Hart, Angie Aparo, and countless others.

In addition to the Songbird Cafe’ held in October of each year, we are pleased to announce that we are preparing for our 2nd annual spring event, the GameDay Cafe’ that will be held Thursday, May 15, 2025.

Beyond the celebration of music, the Songbird Cafe & the GameDay Cafe’ were established to benefit local charities in the Midlands. For more than two decades, the event has raised over two million dollars in support of the charities. This would not have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors combined with the incredible talent showcased on our stage by the vast array of artists.
