Charlyn's Story
Charlyn moved to another city after accepting a job offer. She and her young daughter packed up their house and moved to start a new life. After securing a place to live, she soon found out that the job she accepted was no longer available.
“Boom, everything just fell in that one day.”
As she was desperately trying to find a job, she and her daughter began moving from one friend’s couch to another. Pretty soon her savings were exhausted, and she could no longer pay for necessities for her and her daughter.
Desperate, Charlyn met with a social worker that told her about a new program offered at The Salvation Army called The Pathway of Hope.
“The Pathway of Hope is a program that is national across the Salvation Army. It is focused on breaking the cycle of generational poverty. It’s innovative with integrating The Salvation Army corps within the social services,” said a Pathway of Hope Coordinator.
The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope initiative provides individualized services to families with children who desire to take action to break the cycle of crisis and vulnerability. It seeks to address the root causes of poverty in addition to The Army’s history of compassionate serving. By helping families overcome challenges like unemployment, unstable housing, and lack of education, the program helps lead families down a path toward increased stability and, ultimately, self-sufficiency.
Charlyn has renewed hope today because of the program. She has her own place for her and her daughter, a full-time job, and she is about to graduate from college. She has a beautiful start to a new life.
