How We Help

Every day, we help thousands of people throughout North and South Carolina. We offer unique, local programs, designed to meet the specific needs of each community we serve. Explore the ways we provide services for the Carolinas or find your local Salvation Army to discover local programming.

Family and Individual Shelters

We Offer Hope & Refuge
The Salvation Army Center of Hope & Family Shelter programs are designed to provide emergency or transitional housing to men, women, or families in need. Underlying this program is a motivation to identify the causes of homelessness and work to eliminate homelessness at its source.

While at a Salvation Army shelter, families and individuals participate in programs and workshops developed to promote self-sufficiency and personal development. Each resident is matched with an on-site caseworker and together they create an extensive goal-oriented program designed to identify and overcome the barriers to safe, permanent housing.

The Salvation Army's emergency financial assistance programs help prevent homelessness when financial crises occur.
The Salvation Army provides emergency financial assistance for rent and utilities to help households prevent homelessness. Because each community is unique, the details of financial assistance programs vary between our different commands. There are requirements for assistance that vary by location. These often include, but are not limited to, a valid photo identification card, your social security card, and various other supporting documents. Please do not hesitate to contact your local Salvation Army office for complete details or to schedule a consultation with our staff.

Youth Programs

Boys & Girls Clubs
Our Clubs provide a fun, safe, and constructive environment for kids and teens during out-of-school hours. Community-based and led by professional staff, Clubs serve small towns, large metropolitan areas, and public housing communities, as well as those who live on U.S. military installations across our two states.

The Carolinas Music & Arts Program exists to support, develop, and empower the division through music and creative arts in ministry and mission. We desire to bring glory and honor to God through musical and artistic excellence and to draw our people into a closer relationship with Jesus.

Camp Walter Johnson
The Salvation Army has hosted thousands of children and helped them to create memories that last a lifetime. The friendships that are formed at camp are transformative. Children learn about who God created them to be in a safe and loving community.

Community Centers
Our Community Centers were created for people of all ages to enjoy. When working with youth, our goal is to provide educational, recreational, and spiritual resources to meet their physical, social, academic, and spiritual needs.

After-School Programs
The Salvation Army’s after-school programs serve children and youth of all ages. Providing one-on-one assistance with homework and school assignments, as well as the teaching and advancement of literacy and study skills. Athletic activities are also offered, where kids can play sports, learn athletic skills, and cultivate healthy, safe relationships with friends through better social skills.

Hunger Relief Programs

No one should have to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. Unfortunately, that is the reality for many of our neighbors in the Carolinas. That's why we offer hunger relief programs and services to combat food insecurities.

Food Pantries
Our food pantries are a great way for struggling individuals and families to supplement their existing groceries.

Soup Kitchens
A hot meal can make a world of difference to someone that is struggling with food insecurity or homelessness.

Community Centers
Families are particularly vulnerable during the summer months when children are out of school and eating at home.

Christmas and Seasonal Assistance

The Salvation Army offers an array of Christmas Assistance programs throughout North and South Carolina. This includes assistance with food for the holidays, gifts and toys for children, gifts for senior citizens, and more.

Pathway of Hope

Breaking the Cycle of Crisis
The Salvation Army’s Pathway of Hope initiative provides individualized services to families with children who desire to break the cycle of crisis and vulnerability that repeats generation after generation. It seeks to address the root causes of poverty in addition to The Salvation Army’s history of compassionate serving. By helping families overcome challenges like unemployment, unstable housing, and lack of education, we can lead families down a path toward increased stability and, ultimately, self-sufficiency.

The Pathway of Hope Approach

Providing targeted, specialized services to families with a genuine desire to take action.
Aligning The Salvation Army’s internal resources to the goals of each family as we support their journey.
Utilizing community collaboration and shared resources in service of families in the program.
Moving families away from crises and vulnerability and toward stability, and eventually self-sufficiency, tracking progress along the way with measurable goals.
Strengths-based case management and social work services for each family.
To be eligible you must have at least one child under the age of 18, be motivated, and be committed.

Senior Assistance

More than 14% of Americans over age 71 are affected by dementia. Research suggests that elderly care involving human contact and interpersonal conversation lowers the impact of dementia and depression. The Salvation Army works to provide programs and services to assist seniors socially, emotionally, and financially.

Community Centers
The Salvation Army community centers support senior citizens in different ways. Through a wide variety of programs, older adults can gather together to share interests, develop new skills, and enjoy the company of their peers.

Activities
The Salvation Army works to stimulate the minds and bodies of older adults via educational opportunities, low-impact exercise, dances, lunches, fellowship, and countless other young-at-heart activities.

Residences
To help ease the functional transitions associated with advanced age, we offer housing assistance and living quarters for the elderly - each cultivated with a loving atmosphere of support, kindness, and acceptance.

Through partnerships and relationships with state and local government, law enforcement, and other agencies, we are able to provide comprehensive case management to survivors of human trafficking.
