Stories of Empowerment: John & Maria*
When John and Maria* moved to Florida from New Jersey, they hoped for a fresh start. Life, however, had other plans. John’s disability benefits were suddenly cut, and though his doctors advised against working, he found himself searching desperately for any job to support their household. Maria, who had been working steadily, was soon blindsided by a series of serious health issues that forced her into an unpaid medical leave. Between multiple doctor visits each week and fighting a frustrating battle with denied disability claims, their savings quickly began to dwindle.
Proud and selfless by nature, John and Maria are the kind of people who give back to others without ever asking for anything in return. They volunteer regularly at their church’s food pantry, quietly helping those in need. But when their own situation became dire, they felt too embarrassed to let anyone know they were struggling. The idea of seeking help was almost unbearable.
When they reached out to The Salvation Army’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program, it was a last resort. They arrived at their appointment overwhelmed, carrying a heavy burden of doubt and shame, convinced they wouldn’t qualify for help.
But that day, everything changed.
We were able to cover their overdue electric bill, lifting a tremendous weight off their shoulders. In that moment, tears replaced doubt, and their gratitude was palpable. They were also connected with resources for rental assistance and guided toward additional support services to help them navigate their ongoing financial and health challenges.
Today, John and Maria are on a path toward stability. Their disability claims are moving forward, and they now have a network of support to lean on as they work through this difficult season.
At The Salvation Army, we often find that those who give the most are the ones who hesitate to ask for help. But when they do, we’re here to remind them that compassion comes full circle.
