Shelter Activities – Cooking Classes with Central Texas Food Bank

Feb 14, 2024

At our two family shelters serving families with children experiencing homelessness, we provide shelter, warm meals, and critical resources to families in need. Resources provided on-site include child/family therapy, rapid rehousing programs, employment/education assistance, computer labs, and various activities for both children and parents.

Homelessness can be particularly challenging for children. To bring a sense of normalcy to their lives, our shelters organize monthly enrichment activities. These activities include monthly birthday celebrations, craft sessions, educational time with an on-site teacher, and festive events. Recently, we collaborated with the Central Texas Food Bank to introduce a new activity – cooking classes!

These classes will be held monthly for children at The Rathgeber Center for Families. They will learn cooking safety, nutrition, and how to prepare a healthy meal. Each class focuses on a specific project that the children get to enjoy afterwards. The kids had a great time at the first class and are eager for more.

Our shelter director, Carrie, was thrilled about this opportunity as it aligns with her goal of implementing programs that equip clients with essential life skills for their future beyond the shelter. A huge thank you to Central Texas Food Bank for making this possible!
