The new veteran's wing brings increased dignity and self-confidence with private rooms,
program specific common areas, and an improved self-development environment.
The Salvation Army has been a trusted community partner, providing vital service to our neighbors in Johnson City since 1910. Over the last fifteen years, this life-saving work has included a veteran-specific program with a singular mission of improving the lives of those who have served our country in military service.
With 15 beds for this intensive program, over the last 15 years, 452 veterans have received holistic help including connections with their veteran's benefits, healthy and filling meals, safe shelter in the transition from homelessness to permanent housing, substance abuse counseling and services, spiritual support, rebuilding healthy relationships with the community and loved ones, and long-term support.
In the last three years alone, we have averaged 485 clients per year. Each staying up to 30 days, resulting in more than 3,000 night of shelter per year. The emergency and long-term shelter serves men, women, and families.
As the participants move through the program, they will be encouraged to make their room their home - adding family photos, education certificates, awards, or even their own art. Each personal touch is a reminder of their path forward into a life of independence and success.
The creative building design also affords a secure outdoor courtyard. Sometimes, fresh air and sunshine can make all the difference; this area was included to make it possible.
The bright and welcoming common area anchors the new wing with tall windows and comfortable amenities. The area will feature computer stations and flexible seating areas. It will serve as a meeting place for support groups, life-skills training, and fellowship with those of shared experiences.
Just off the common area is the laundry room. The availability of dedicated washers and dryers isn’t just functional. These seemingly simple appliances offer the tangible reminder that clean clothes and bedding reflect the intangible reality of human dignity and self-respect.
Every element of the new Veteran's Program wing has been intentionally designed to improve The Salvation Army's service to our local military veterans. The new veteran's wing will serve as an important mid-transition home.
Each veteran in the intensive program will be assigned their own private room with a private bathroom. The individual rooms provide more flexibility for program participation regardless of gender. Each of the 15 rooms will be furnished with a bed, dresser, desk and chair, in addition to linens and personal care items.
Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, The Salvation Army of Johnson City provides a safe place for those in our community without a home and a comfortable place for tomorrow.
With the completion of the new Veteran’s wing, a renovation project in the current emergency and long-term shelter will allow both additional beds and increased dignity for residents. Near constant use for so long has an impact on facilities despite our focus on stewardship. This needed renovation will allow The Salvation Army to continue to serve the least, last, and lost for years to come.
With the help of trained Salvation Army staff, Gary found the desire, strength, and tools to turn his life around. He’s rekindled hope and purpose through his service to others. He still struggles with invisible injuries, but has learned not just to cope but overcome this obstacle.
