RICHMOND, VA (Dec. 9, 2024) — The Salvation Army Central Virginia Area Command is gearing up to take part in the National Commander’s Red Kettle Challenge, an annual day of fundraising across the country, issued by Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder, the organization’s national commander. The challenge will take place on Saturday, December 14, and calls on Salvation Army officers, staff, volunteers and supporters nationwide to raise more donations than Commissioner Hodder himself in just four hours. The national goal is to raise $2 million, with all funds supporting vital services in local communities.

A live video stream of bell ringing at Red Kettles nationwide will be shared on The Salvation Army’s Facebook page, along with pop-in chats from local Salvation Army locations across the country.

The Salvation Army Central Virginia will be bell ringing from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 14, at the Short Pump Walmart (11400 W Broad Street Glen Allen, grocery door entrance), encouraging the Greater Richmond community to participate and contribute to The Salvation Army’s efforts during the holiday season and beyond.

“Building on past successes, we’re raising the bar even higher this year,” said Major Samuel Kim, Area Commander of The Salvation Army Central Virginia. “With the growing needs in our community, the National Commander’s Red Kettle Challenge presents a powerful chance to make a significant impact. We invite everyone in the Greater Richmond Area to participate and help us meet the community’s need.” All funds raised through the Red Kettles stay local to support services not only during the holidays but also all year.

Major Kim will also treat the public to a unique, holiday experience and play Christmas songs on his musical saw.
