Cooling Center Opens as Temperatures Begin to Climb
1900 Chamberlayne Avenue Reopening with Capacity to serve 100 Individuals when Temps Reach 92 or More
RICHMOND, Va. (June 21, 2022) — Starting Sunday, June 23, The Salvation Army Central Virginia Inclement Weather Shelter will open a Cooling Center for adults 18 years and older. Hydration and snacks will be provided during the operating hours of 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on days when the temperature is forecasted to be 92 degrees or higher. Persistent extreme heat or other extreme weather might extend these operating hours. The address of The Salvation Army Central Virginia Inclement Weather Shelter is 1900 Chamberlayne Avenue, Richmond, 23222. The Cooling Center entrance is located at the back of the building, which faces Sledd Street and the U.S. Post Office.
According to the National Weather Service, heat has been the deadliest weather phenomenon in the United States over the past decade. Experts predict this summer will be one of the hottest on record across the country, and according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s seasonal outlook, Virginia's summer forecast is leaning toward above-normal temperatures this year.
Across the country, The Salvation Army is opening cooling centers for those who need water and shade, as well as providing utility support for the elderly or other vulnerable individuals in affected communities.

“Most Americans don’t know how serious of a threat these soaring temperatures can be to unsheltered people and other vulnerable populations,” said Commissioner Kenneth G. Hodder, national commander of The Salvation Army. “Because of the generous support of our donors, we are able to offer heat relief at many of our 7,200 locations across the country, which can be lifesaving amid a hotter-than-usual summer.”
The best way to support these efforts is by making a financial contribution, which allows The Salvation Army to meet immediate and long-term needs. All money raised stays local to support programs in Central Virginia. Nationally, 82 cents of every dollar goes directly to support local programs. Central Virginia donations can be made at www.salvationarmycentralva.org.
