Sep 5, 2023

The Salvation Army of Greenville, Pickens and Oconee Counties recently welcomed new Area Commanders Majors Mike and Christine Harris. In this role, Majors Harris have administrative oversight of all Salvation Army programs and services in Greenville, Oconee & Pickens Counties. This includes the Greenville Kroc Center, the Greenville Rutherford Street facilities, and the Service Centers in Oconee and Pickens counties. They also offer support the two Salvation Army Church congregations that are based in Greenville.

Major Mike Harris is the oldest of three children born in Coventry, England. He grew up as a member of Coventry City Corps, where he was a 5th generation member, before moving to the U.S. in September 1991. For the next 11 years, Mike worked as an internal auditor for The Salvation Army’s Potomac Division before becoming the Business Administrator for the Richmond, Va. Area Command.

Major Christine Harris is a fourth generation Salvation Army Officer (serving as a pastor). Born in Dallas, Texas, to Majors Glenn and Milly Fite, Christine is one of five siblings. Moving around as an officer’s child, she eventually settled in Richmond, Va., where she worked first as a baker and then as the Christian Education Director for the Richmond Citadel Corps.

Following their marriage in 1997, they have been blessed with three beautiful children – Hope (24), Michael Jr. (22), and Christian (19). Hope and Michael both live in Dallas working for the Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters. Christian is a sophomore at Asbury University.

Since Mike and Christine entered The Salvation Army’s College for Officers Training in 2002, they’ve been commissioned and ordained as Corps Officers in Fredericksburg, Va.; Regional Coordinators in Hickory/High Country., N.C.; Corps Officers in Clearwater, Fla; and most recently serving at Divisional Headquarters in Dallas.

“We believe we’ve been called to dedicate our life and career to one of service to others through The Salvation Army,” said Major Mike Harris. “As we begin this next chapter, we look forward to partnering with our community as we continue to provide physical, emotional and spiritual care to our neighbors in need across Greenville, Pickens and Oconee Counties.”

The Majors Harris arrive in their new role in Greenville after the recent retirement of their predecessors, Majors Andrew and Amy Kelly.
