Lynchburg, VA (May 25, 2017) – National Donut Day 2017 will be celebrated on Friday, June 2. This day was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to help those in need during the Great Depression and to commemorate the work of the "Donut Lassies" who served donuts to soldiers during World War I and are often credited with popularizing the donut in the United States.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg and The Wandering Donut will be providing a free donut on this day to all fire fighters, first responders, law enforcement and active military. Eligible individuals will need to show an ID card, badge or arrive in uniform to receive the donut. "We are so excited to be able to give back to those who serve our community every day," stated Corps Captain Donald Dohmann. "Our mission is to serve others and what better way to accomplish this than to be able to serve those who put their lives on the line to maintain our quality of life."

The Wandering Donut is a food truck specializing in homemade donuts and has been in businesses since 2015. It is family owned by Sallie and Menno Fisher and operates in three locations in the Lynchburg Area. On Friday, June 2, they will be located in the parking lot of the Timbrook Square Shopping Center near Country Cooking on Timberlake Rd. Hours of operation are from 6am until 1pm.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg serves Lynchburg, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Campbell and Nelson counties and has been part of the community for more than 115 years. If you would like more information about this event or how you can support or partner with The Salvation Army, please call 434-845-5939 or visit https://salvationarmypotomac.org/lynchburgva/.
