The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg is Seeking Community Support for #Help5000Lynchburg Challenge

Aug 10, 2020 | by tshank2

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg is asking the community to take part in the #Help5000Lynchburg challenge, which begins on Monday, August 10 and lasts for two weeks.

Inspired by the story of how God fed 5000 with five loaves of bread and two fish, the Lynchburg Salvation Army is encouraging the community to help the organization raise $25,000 to replace the loss of revenue due to event cancellations from Covid19.  "When we received a donation from a child in the amount of $2.75 in a homemade card expressing her appreciation for the work we are doing, it encouraged us that even during difficult times such as these God can multiply gifts given from the heart to meet our needs," stated Major Caleb Prieto.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg has remained open during the quarantine and continues to provide shelter, community feeding and assistance with utilities and rent for those in need in the Greater Lynchburg community.  "We have served hundreds during this time and anticipate those numbers will only increase as COVID19 continues to impact our community," shared Major Prieto. "We want the community to know how appreciative we are for their prayers, support and donations as every amount will be used to help those we serve in Greater Lynchburg."

One of the events canceled as a result of COVID19 was Christmas in July with Mister Goodies, a collaboration that has taken place on July 25 for more than 10 years. Mister Goodies has given $2,000 to help start the challenge. "There is so much need right here in our community and the Salvation Army does so much good for our area,” stated Mister Goodies' owner Doug Ulrich.  "Christmas in July will be back again in July 2021, bigger and better than ever and until then people can continue to help The Salvation Army by participating in this challenge."
