72 hours away from becoming homeless

Jun 5, 2025

At the start of the year, Ms. N faced a series of life-altering challenges all at once—going through a divorce, losing her job, and facing an active eviction. She spent the first month of the New Year in and out of court, navigating both the divorce and the eviction process. Overwhelmed and uncertain, she felt lost during what was one of the most challenging periods of her life.

By late February, Ms. N and her two daughters were just 72 hours away from becoming homeless when she turned to The Salvation Army for help. She walked in appearing worn down by the circumstances of the previous two months. Though she composed herself with hope, her voice revealed exhaustion and despair. She explained her situation and displayed a desperate need for support to stay in her home.

Thanks to the swift advocacy of her Case Manager, The Salvation Army was able to intervene and successfully stop the immediate eviction. Ms. N was also guided toward additional resources to help create additional stability opportunities. She received referrals to Goodwill for job training, SC Works for employment services, DSS for the Pathway Scholarship, Midlands Technical College for further education, and The Boys & Girls Club to support her daughters.

Since then, Ms. N has applied and received the Pathway Scholarship through DSS and enrolled in a three-month certification program at Midlands Tech. She has also completed three additional workshops through SC Works, earning certificates of completion to strengthen her résumé. She continues to check in with her Case Manager biweekly, receiving ongoing encouragement and support.

With the critical assistance she received during a time of deep crisis, Ms. N and her family have found renewed hope. What once felt like the imminent homelessness has transformed into a renewed journey toward stability and self-sufficiency.
