A new beginning for Ms. W
When Ms. W and her three children arrived in Columbia, SC, they were looking for a fresh start. A 39-year-old single mother, Ms. W had recently left Virginia, seeking safety, stability, and a new chapter after surviving domestic violence. With no nearby family to lean on and limited resources, the journey was daunting—but she was determined to create a better future for her children.
Shortly after arriving, the weight of relocation, unemployment, and mounting bills began to take its toll. Ms. W quickly found herself falling behind on rent and utilities, facing the threat of eviction and yet another disruption for her family. That’s when the Lexington One School District referred her to The Salvation Army of the Midlands.
Through the compassionate care of her case worker and the support of the Siemer Institute-funded program, along with a matching grant, Ms. W received assistance with rent and utilities for several months. This critical support gave her the breathing room she needed to focus on her next steps.
During this time, Ms. W secured a new job as an assistant hotel manager—a role with greater responsibility and a higher wage than her previous employment. Over the course of five months, with steady guidance and support, she and her children were able to rebuild a stable and secure home life.
Today, Ms. W and her family are not only housed—they are thriving. With renewed hope and deep gratitude, Ms. W looks ahead to the future with confidence, knowing that brighter days are here, thanks to a community that believed in her resilience.
