From House Fire to Hope: How You Kept a Midlands Family Housed

Aug 28, 2025

“Thanks to your support, this Midlands family

has a safe place to call home after

losing everything in a house fire.”

When a devastating fire destroyed the fully paid-off home of an elderly Midlands couple (ages 94 and 83) and their adult son, they lost everything—without insurance or a way to rebuild. After two nights of emergency hotel support, they pulled together their fixed incomes to extend the stay for a few more weeks. The sudden shift from no mortgage to market-rate rent felt impossible—especially with health concerns mounting.

That’s when your Salvation Army stepped in. Our caseworker helped the family navigate emergency housing vouchers, connect with local partners, and build a realistic budget for the months ahead. We covered about a month of hotel costs to keep them safely sheltered, then leveraged ESG Rapid Re-Housing funds to secure a deposit, utilities, and three months of rent. That breathing room made stability possible—and helped this family avoid homelessness during their most vulnerable season.

“Because of supporters like you, three of our neighbors remained safe, stable, and together.”
