Remembering D. Reece Williams III

A Legacy of Faithful Service to The Salvation Army of the Midlands

The Salvation Army of the Midlands recently lost a devoted advocate, trusted leader, and cherished friend, D. Reece Williams III, whose legacy of service spans more than five decades.

Reece joined The Salvation Army of the Midlands Advisory Board in 1971 and went on to serve in numerous leadership roles, including Past Chairman. In recognition of his extraordinary commitment, he became a Life Member in 1992. For more than 55 years, Reece remained actively engaged, offering thoughtful guidance, steady leadership, and an unwavering belief in The Salvation Army’s mission to serve those most in need.

His service was not symbolic. Reece played an instrumental role in several pivotal moments in the organization’s history, including leadership on the 2007 Capital Campaign Committee, which successfully raised $1.5 million to eliminate organizational debt. He later assisted with fundraising efforts to retire the building mortgage in 2015 and supported program growth through meaningful contributions, including a 2019 gift toward the playground in the Reading Program courtyard. In 2023, Reece generously shared his legal expertise to help secure a service mark through the Woodyard Fund process.

While his professional insight and leadership were invaluable, Reece was equally known for his quiet generosity and humility. One of the most telling examples of his character occurred in 2018, when Reece discovered that a vintage Rolex he had purchased decades earlier was worth nearly $40,000. Without hesitation or fanfare, he donated the entire proceeds to The Salvation Army. When asked why, his response was simple: “It just seemed like the obvious thing to do.”

That sentiment captured who Reece was — faithful, selfless, and deeply committed to serving others. His support of The Salvation Army was rooted not in recognition, but in a sincere desire to make a lasting difference in the lives of individuals and families throughout the Midlands.

Reece’s life and service leave an enduring imprint on The Salvation Army of the Midlands and the countless lives touched through his generosity, leadership, and example. His legacy will continue to inspire the work carried out in his honor.

The Salvation Army of the Midlands extends its deepest sympathy to Reece’s wife, Nancy, his family, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. We are profoundly grateful for his life, his service, and his unwavering dedication to our mission.
