A Message from the Director, Maria Covarrubias
The Importance of Health and a Clean Learning Environment
A clean classroom is more than just a tidy space; it is the foundation of a healthy, productive learning environment. In a setting where children interact closely and share materials, maintaining high standards of hygiene—from individual handwashing to monthly deep cleaning—is essential for the physical and academic well-being of the entire center.
The first line of defense against the spread of germs is consistent handwashing. In the classroom children not only touch, but place in their mouths, shared toys, supplies and books. Without proper hand washing, these surfaces quickly become areas for viruses and bacteria to grow. Teaching children to wash their hands before meals, after playground time and most importantly, when sneezing our coughing, reduces the spread of preventable illnesses and student absenteeism. Ensuring teachers model the same handwashing hygiene When children and teachers are healthy and present, the learning environment is more productive.
Beyond personal hygiene, the physical environment of the classroom requires rigorous maintenance. While daily wiping of surfaces is necessary, it is the monthly deep cleaning of rugs, tables, and chairs that addresses the "hidden" threats. Rugs, in particular, act as sponges for dust, allergens, and microbes that can trigger asthma or allergies, affecting a child's ability to focus. Similarly, the nooks and crannies of chairs and tables can harbor grime that standard daily cleaning might miss. A monthly deep-clean cycle ensures that these high-touch areas are truly sanitized, creating a fresh and healthy environment.
In class observations, results show that a cluttered or dirty space can be overstimulating and stressful, making it harder for children to concentrate. Encouraging children to take responsibility for their own surroundings, keeping their work area clean, instilling a lifelong habit of orderliness and care.
Ultimately, the commitment to a clean center is an investment in the students and families themselves. By prioritizing handwashing and scheduled deep cleanings, centers can create a safe environment where the only things "spreading" are ideas, curiosity, friendship and laughter.
It takes the village as the saying goes, with the cooperation of teachers and maintenance staff we can ensure we provide a safe and healthy space for children to learn and grow.
