The Salvation Army Celebrates National Donut Day with Sweet Treats and Fun at Shipley Do-Nuts!

This year marks the 86th anniversary and celebration of National Donut Day. Established in 1938 by The Salvation Army, National Donut Day is a great excuse to enjoy donuts and serves as a reminder of the bravery of The Salvation Army’s “Donut Lassies” who joined soldiers on the front lines during World War I.

In 1917, The Salvation Army volunteers traveled to France and set up makeshift huts to provide soldiers with essential supplies, emotional and spiritual support, and freshly baked donuts. The sweet treat did more than raise spirits; it brought comfort and a taste of home to those who risked their lives fighting for freedom.

In honor of this year's National Donut Day, The Salvation Army of Orange and Osceola Counties partnered with Shipley Do-Nuts in a fun-filled celebration featuring donut eating contests, raffles, a donut customization station, a photo booth, music, and games!

“The Salvation Army has provided hope and help to those in need across the country as the nation’s largest private provider of social services,” said Captain Ken Chapman, Area Commander, The Salvation Army. “Today, Donut Day is a tradition to celebrate the work of the original Donut Lassies by spreading cheer through donuts as we continue to provide critical services, and emotional and spiritual care to those in need.”

Celebrating the rich history of The Salvation Army Donut Lassies in this way reminds us of how much comfort a simple snack can bring to those who need it most. The philosophy of soup, soap, and salvation continues to be at the forefront of the Orlando Area Command by providing to those in need hot meals (soup), clean places to sleep at night (soap), and the gospel of Jesus Christ to all who are willing to listen (salvation).
