Corps Officers | Indian River County
Majors Phillip and Lynn Irish are Salvation Army officers who serve as both pastors and administrators, the Irishes follow a tradition of appointments that typically change every three to four years, allowing them to respond to the evolving needs of communities across the region.
Originally from Ironton, Ohio, Phillip and Lynn met through their families’ involvement in a small, mission-focused church. At the time, Phillip worked as a radio and television producer and director, while Lynn was a registered nurse. Their shared faith and commitment to service quickly drew them together, and they became actively involved in ministry work within a unique tri-state region, living in Ohio, working in West Virginia, and worshiping in Kentucky.
Their involvement deepened through a small Salvation Army corps in Kentucky that Phillip’s parents attended. While Phillip was teaching a Sunday school class, a visiting Salvation Army divisional leader challenged the couple to consider full-time ministry as Salvation Army officers. After prayerful discernment, Phillip and Lynn recognized this calling as God’s will for their lives. They sold their belongings, moved their family to Atlanta, Georgia, and enrolled in the two-year Salvation Army College for Officer Training.
Following their commissioning, the Irishes served as captains for 15 years before being promoted to the rank of major. Their first appointment took them to Nashville, Tennessee, where they served for four years. Since then, they have faithfully ministered in Hopkinsville, Kentucky; Mobile, Alabama; Orlando, Florida; Citrus County, Florida; and Clay County, Florida, near Jacksonville, gaining broad experience in church leadership and community services.
Phillip and Lynn are the parents of four children. Their eldest daughter, Morgan, is married and lives in Maine with her husband, Eddie, who serves as the Salvation Army Divisional Music Director for Northern New England. They are the proud grandparents of a son, Charlie. Daughter Madison, 26, resides locally. Daughter Maysun, 18, is a senior in high school and will graduate this spring, while their son, Merrik, 16, is also attending high school.
Quoting Salvation Army founder William Booth, Major Phillip Irish often reflects the heart behind their work: “This, and better we’ll do.” Together, Phillip and Lynn Irish are committed to faithful service and to discovering what God has planned for their time in ministry.
