FOR NEIGHBORS LIKE RICHARD, YOU ARE A LIFELINE

Richard is no stranger to struggle. In fact, he was only 8 years old when he and his mother first turned to The Salvation Army for help. They lived in the emergency shelter for some time while his mother worked to get them back on their feet.

“The Salvation Army helped us by providing a safe place for us until we had a new place of our own,” says Richard.

At various moments throughout his childhood, Richard’s family would again cross paths with The Salvation Army. Whether she was faced with a job loss or other financial troubles, his mother always knew where to find the support they needed.

As an adult, Richard’s struggle continued. When he found himself homeless and out of work due to mental illness, he returned to The Salvation Army once again and was welcomed into our men’s shelter. During that stay, Richard grew more and more curious about The Salvation Army’s work.

“Learning that they operate in 130 countries around the word, and do so much to help so many people inspired me so much,” he shares.

That inspiration led Richard to apply for work as one of our residential aides. In January, he celebrated his first anniversary as a staff member.

“Every day, I get to see people get help and have hope because of the work they do,” he says. “The same help and hope they gave to me and my family for so many years. They most certainly live up to their motto of ‘Doing the Most Good.’”

For neighbors like Richard, you are a lifeline. Thank you for your support in Memphis and the Mid-South for more than 120 years.
