Commanders Majors Tim and Cheryl Gilliam

Majors Tim and Cheryl Gilliam have been Salvation Army officers for 27 years. Their nine appointments have taken them from being corps officers in Dallas, Lufkin, McAllen, and Waco, TX; to being Divisional Youth Secretaries in Maryland & West Virginia; to being Area Commanders in St. Petersburg and Fort Myers, FL; to serving at Territorial Headquarters for four years based in Atlanta, GA; and now as Area Commanders in Memphis, TN and the Mid-South.

The Gilliams believe in keeping things simple – love God and love people (Mark 12: 30 & 31). They also believe in getting back to the basics of ministry which include the need to: 1) evangelize our communities, 2) disciple our congregations, and 3) train Christian leaders. These basic tenets are the basis of the ministry strategy called “RAISE” that was inspired by the Holy Spirit in their last appointment.

The Gilliams have three adult children. Their son, Jacob, was just ordained as a minister and commissioned as a Salvation Army officer. Their daughter, Ashleigh, lives and works in Louisville, KY. Michael, the youngest, is currently a junior at Asbury University in Wilmore, KY.

Together, the Gilliams have publicly stated for the last several years that they believe “revival” is beginning in the Church and probably won’t happen through “typical” means (ref. Asbury University.) We’re seeing that played out before our eyes – even now! The Gilliams are filled with hope when they think about the future – after all, they “know how the story ends.”

A major factor in the development and growth of Salvation Army programs and services has been the support given by community leaders throughout the country.

This “army behind the Army” has interpreted community needs, explained the program and services to the community, and provided financial assistance, fundraising and other support to the Army’s efforts to render effective service.

These friends give valued advice and assistance through their membership in organized groups, such as advisory boards, advisory councils and committees, women’s auxiliaries, and as program and event volunteers.
