Renewal Place Helped Shaping Tonya's Story From Homelessness To PHD
TONYA'S STORY
Tonya came to the Renewal Place program suffering from alcohol and drug addiction with her 3 children. Days before entering the program, she delivered and left a baby girl at Methodist Hospital. Working with her counselors she was able to overcome the fear and shame she felt and be reunited with her 4th child. Tonya is now a successful high school chemistry teacher, finishing her Ph.D.
Renewal Place, a signature Salvation Army of Memphis program, works in concert with the Shelby County drug court as an intensive-treatment alternative to incarceration for nonviolent drug offenders - and those charged with crimes motivated by drug dependency. All while providing wrap-around care and counseling for mothers and their children. The Renewal Place program has had more than 180 graduates, 78% remain clean and sober long-term.
