Local Response to Tragedy Image

Local Response to Tragedy

The Salvation Army responds to those in need in times of crisis and disaster.

The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command quickly went into action offering their support as needed to local authorities in the aftermath of the tragic mid-air air collision of an Army helicopter and an American Eagle flight as it approached Reagan National Airport.

February 1, 2025 -- The first 48 hours after a tragedy are filled with grief and uncertainty. But one thing we know for sure—the power of our community is unwavering.

In the past two days, we have witnessed incredible strength, compassion, and unity. As recovery efforts continue, The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command’s Emergency Disaster Services team remains on the ground, providing support to those impacted by this tragedy. From the figure skating community to first responders involved in recovery efforts, as well as our local fire departments and law enforcement, we are here to serve those who serve.

We will continue to serve throughout the weekend and beyond—wherever we are called.

Please continue to keep the victims’ families, first responders, and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers. Together, we are #DCStrong.

How We Help

The regional American Eagle jet was carrying skaters and their coaches and families returning home from a figure skating event held alongside the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas. The Salvation Army was deployed to Skate Quest in Reston, Virginia, on Thursday, January 30, to serve from 2:00-6:00 pm. They provided food and hydration to 130 people and 8 Emotional and Spiritual Care encounters.

At Gravelly Point along the Potomac River, Salvation Army NCAC personnel served coffee and sandwiches/snacks to FBI, Police, and divers involved in the recovery operations. We served approximately 50 first responders on Thursday and returned to provide breakfast sandwiches and coffee to first responders on Friday, January 31.

Our Sherman Avenue Corps also visited local police and fire departments to recognize their efforts and provide encouragement, nourishment, and care.

On Friday, NCAC and support personnel are taking lunch to first responders working along the river who are primarily diverting traffic and moving pedestrians away from sensitive search areas.

Also on Friday, our Solomon G. Brown Corps visited a local D.C. police station to provide food, encouragement, and prayers for the officers working tirelessly in the wake of this tragedy. A dedicated corps member joined our corps officers on this visit, which is a true testament of our ministry and the power of community in times of need.

Even in difficult times, a simple meal and a few kind words can remind our first responders that they are not alone. We are grateful for their service and honored to support them.

Please keep them, the victims’ families, and all those affected in your thoughts and prayers.
