Restoring Hope After the Storm

Jun 27, 2023 | by Jessica Orth

In the aftermath of a devastating thunderstorm that wreaked havoc on Tulsa, causing extensive damage and leaving many in difficult circumstances due to power outages, the Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team sprang into action. With unwavering dedication to serving those in need, The Salvation Army embarked on a mission to provide much-needed relief and support to the affected individuals and families.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, The Salvation Army EDS team swiftly deployed a mobile feeding unit to the heart of the storm-stricken areas. From Thursday to Saturday, the dedicated team set up camp, offering food, hydration, and emotional care to those facing adversity. Despite the formidable challenges posed by the storm, The Salvation Army served meals, cold drinks, and snacks to individuals and families grappling with the lack of electricity.

Amidst their efforts, Lieutenant Mariah Deshazo, The Salvation Army Sand Springs Corps Officer, reflected on her first day serving the community. "On my first official day as a Sand Springs Officer, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude as I wholeheartedly embraced the opportunity to dive headfirst into serving this remarkable community," she shared. Lieutenant Deshazo found it an honor to interact with the citizens of Sand Springs, offering them hope through the distribution of hot meals, drinks, and emotional care during the challenging aftermath of the storm.

Taking a proactive approach, The Salvation Army EDS team decided to go beyond their stationary relief efforts. Rather than waiting for individuals to come to them, the team took to the neighborhoods still grappling with power outages. They went door-to-door, providing comfort and support to each person, ensuring that nobody felt alone during this arduous time.

In a remarkable collaboration, The Salvation Army forged a partnership with Family & Children Services, creating a beacon of hope for the community. When one of their offices lost power, the dedicated staff joined forces with the Center of Hope, the Salvation Army's homeless shelter and cooling station. This unexpected alliance not only provided shelter for the homeless, but also offered engagement and entertainment. A larger space was opened up, filled with board games, puzzles, and heartwarming movies—a true blessing for all the guests seeking refuge from the storm's aftermath.

The Salvation Army's mission extends beyond immediate relief efforts. With a holistic approach, they aim to provide emotional and spiritual care alongside practical assistance to individuals and families affected by the thunderstorm. Their commitment to helping the community recover, rebuild, and regain stability remains resolute and unwavering.

For those wishing to make a difference in the Tulsa community during this challenging time, The Salvation Army invites donations to their relief efforts. Every contribution goes a long way in providing vital support and aid to those in need.
