Jun 13, 2023 | by Jessica Orth

In a delightful celebration of community and gratitude, The Salvation Army Tulsa Area Command embraced the significance of Donut Day on June 2. This annual event holds a special place in the hearts of many, not just for its delectable treats, but for the deep-rooted history it represents. Originating in 1938, Donut Day was established to honor the "Donut Lassies," courageous Salvation Army volunteers who provided comfort and sustenance to soldiers during World War I.

On this momentous Donut Day, The Salvation Army Tulsa Area Command took the opportunity to pay homage to this cherished history and express their gratitude to those who have stood alongside them in their endeavors. Countless boxes of freshly baked donuts were distributed to donors, volunteers, and supporters as a heartfelt gesture of appreciation for their unwavering support and commitment to making a positive impact in the community.

Adding to the excitement, Lieutenant Mariah, the Salvation Army officer of Sand Springs, joined News on 6 for their morning show. She shared the captivating story behind Donut Day, highlighting the remarkable dedication of the Donut Lassies and their significant role in providing comfort and joy during a time of great adversity. Lt. Mariah's presence further emphasized the importance of this day and The Salvation Army's ongoing mission to serve the community.

The atmosphere on Donut Day was filled with the irresistible aroma of freshly baked delights and the smiles of those who indulged in these sweet treats. It was a day that brought people together, fostering a sense of unity and appreciation. Through their efforts, The Salvation Army aimed to not only satisfy cravings but also to recognize the invaluable contributions of their supporters, who help them make a difference in the lives of individuals and families in need.

Donut Day in Tulsa served as a joyful reminder of the power of community and the impact that even a simple act of kindness can have. It showcased The Salvation Army's commitment to fostering goodwill and extending gratitude to those who generously contribute to Doing the Most Good.

In the spirit of Donut Day, we remember the selflessness of the Donut Lassies and carry their legacy forward, spreading love, kindness, and a sprinkle of sweetness wherever we go.
