The Maryland-West Virginia Division held its Labor Day Family Retreat Sept. 1-3, welcoming special guests Commissioners Don and Debi Bell, Major Mike and Cathy Himes from the Eastern Territory and Majors Gary and Beth Sturdivant. Leading the youth were Major Doug and Captain Storm McClure. Each of this year's guests had a special tie to the division, whether it be home, heart or family.

With the theme of "Grow," the weekend's events recalled the past, experienced the present and encouraged delegates to move forward into the future.

Friday night focused on the past as delegates were welcomed by Larry the Cable Guy, played by Major Gary Sturdivant. A great time of testimony encouraged everyone to keep moving in the faith. Major Cathy Himes recounted the parable of the sower and challenged young and old to grow.

Saturday was focused on the present with Major Mike Himes. Originally from West Virginia, Major Himes said in his challenge, "The gospel is really a two-step process to trust and obey." Trust what God is saying and doing in our lives and obey what that direction might be.

On the coldest day of the year, the Maryland-West Virginia Division made a commitment to the present in rededicating the Dockeney and Jefferson lodges. Led by Commissioner Don Bell and Major Art Penhale, divisional commander, the lodges underwent a major overhaul to support MWV's growing programs.

Saturday evening was the Taste of Tomahawk. With the leadership of Majors Mike and Nettie Morton, judges sampled the best the division had to offer. From barbecue to jerk chicken, homemade chili and soups to ribs and cinnamon rolls, judges had the task of picking the winner, which this year was the chili from the Huntington, West Virginia, Corps.

Sunday brought the end to a great weekend with a challenge from Mike Himes. Delegates were reminded that we can't grow outside our corps if we aren't growing within ourselves. Corps were then invited to have a time of group, and personal, rededication to go outside the walls of their corps and be the church to their community.
