Celebrating Style and Service: ‘April Showers, May Flowers' Spring Luncheon
Amidst the blossoming beauty of spring, The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary (SAWA) of Washington, D.C. hosted a dazzling event at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, VA, that seamlessly melded fashion and philanthropy.
The ‘April Showers, May Flowers’ luncheon commenced on April 10 with a heartwarming display of generosity as 32 meticulously curated gift baskets from 59 donors were available for purchase. Among the treasures were unique offerings from Herend Bunny, MacKenzie Childs, and Nieman Marcus, to go along with local culinary delights, handcrafted pottery, and unforgettable experiences.
During the event, long-time SAWA member Robyne Barth was bestowed the prestigious Women’s Auxiliary Berniece Edwards Leadership Award. Named in honor of a cherished member, Berniece Edwards, who embodied an unwavering commitment to SAWA and The Salvation Army, this award celebrates exemplary leadership and dedication. Majors Todd and Wilma Mason, area commanders, presented the award to Barth who has been a SAWA member for nine years.
Another highlight of the afternoon was a fashion show featuring designs by Frances Valentine led by visionary owner, Elyce Arons. Formerly co-owner of Kate Spade, Arons now spearheads Frances Valentine stores across the United States, embracing diversity and inclusivity in her collections. Notably, Major Wilma captivated attendees in a stunning green ensemble, epitomizing elegance and poise.
This year's event was a significant milestone for the Women’s Auxiliary in the nation’s capital, marking the largest fundraising event since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With 182 registrants in attendance, the gathering was a testament to the unwavering support of the community. Guests were treated to a three-course meal followed by an exclusive pop-up shop. Elyce Arons graciously autographed any purse purchased, fostering a sense of connection and camaraderie.
The impact of this luncheon extends far beyond fundraising. It was a celebration of unity, compassion, and the enduring power of community. As attendees bid farewell to the 'April Showers, May Flowers' Fashion-Focused Spring Luncheon, they carry memories of style, sophistication, and a renewed sense of purpose and solidarity. Their participation and support have made a significant difference.
