The Salvation Army of Owensboro, Kentucky's Ministry to Women group hosted a Tea & Auction on Saturday, September 9. The event, orchestrated by Lt. Colonel Shirley White under the leadership of Lieutenant Carla Haworth, was held to benefit The Salvation Army Children's Homes in Mexico. The ladies attending the event donned elegant hats, some even wearing complimenting gloves, creating a charming atmosphere reminiscent of a modern-day high tea.

Lt. Colonel White, beaming with enthusiasm, spoke of the event's purpose, saying, "This event is not just about raising funds but also bringing our community together in support of a noble cause. We are here to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, and I am overwhelmed by the generosity and camaraderie displayed here today."

The tables were adorned with matching teacups and saucers accompanied by a full tea set with teapot, sugar bowl, and creamer dish. Guests had the opportunity to choose from a variety of flavored tea bags to brew their own cup of tea.

The tea event commenced at noon and included a light luncheon served buffet-style. Chicken salad and egg salad finger sandwiches were among the delectable offerings. The buffet tables were also laden with nuts, cheeses, a vibrant fruit salad, an assortment of tea cakes, cookies, and an array of other appealing desserts.

Special guests for the event were Majors Zach and Shelley Bell from Kentucky-Tennessee Divisional Headquarters, who embraced the theme of the occasion: "If Teacups Could Talk." Major Shelley Bell imparted wisdom on the art of brewing a perfect cup of tea while sharing inspirational words from Mark 6:31, where Jesus invites us to find rest in a quiet place. She noted, "In the midst of our busy lives, moments like these offer a sanctuary of peace and reflection, reminding us of the importance of rest and spiritual nourishment."

The purse auction was hosted by Major Zach Bell, who provided entertaining descriptions of each purse, complete with surprise goodies inside. The ensuing bidding wars were filled with laughter and excitement as nearly 40 women from the women's group and the community participated.

A silent auction followed, featuring items generously donated by local businesses and Owensboro Ministry to Women members. Bidders engaged in friendly competition as they vied for items ranging from handmade quilts and signed artwork to a beautiful autumn wreath and various gift cards and certificates donated by area businesses.

Penny Vandgrift, a dedicated member of the Ministry to Women, played a pivotal role in securing donations from over 20 local proprietors. Her efforts were instrumental in the event's success.

The event proved to be a resounding triumph, surpassing fundraising goals by nearly threefold. The Owensboro Corps Ministry to Women group's dedication was met with divine blessings as they raised significant funds to support The Salvation Army Children's Homes in Mexico.

The event was not only a testament to the spirit of giving within the community but also a witness to the power of coming together for a noble cause. The Owensboro Ministry to Women group and their supporters left the event with hearts full of gratitude and a sense of accomplishment, knowing they had made a significant impact on the lives of children in need.
