Promoted to Glory: Major Ronald L. Davis Sr.

Major Ron Davis was born in Marion, Ind. on January 28, 1932, to the late Lloyd & Betha Davis. Major Davis was summoned to his eternal home on Tuesday, September 2, 2021, from Cumming, Ga.

Major Davis was raised in Washington, D.C., where he attended public schools. He learned the discipline of work early in his life, and he had his first job when he was 11 years old as a carry-out for the neighborhood grocery store. While still in high school, he was employed by a company which handled documents for the federal government. This required that he have federal security clearance. He worked here until he entered The Salvation Army’s College for Officer Training from the Washington Southeast Corps. While attending the corps, he was involved in open air meetings where he sang, preached, played his horn, he was also involved in YPL, sold the War Cry, played in the band and even sang a few solos and was a graduate corps cadet.

He was enrolled as a Junior Soldier on Oct. 15, 1939, and enrolled as a Senior Solder in 1947. Major Davis entered training September 3, 1952 as part of the "Heralds" session of cadets, and he was commissioned on June 1, 1953.

Once commissioned, he assisted in Nashville, Tenn., Roanoke, Va., Charleston, W. Va., Charlottesville, Va., and Norfolk, Va. In July 1955, he and Lt. Betty Hart were married and together they were appointed to Hampton, Covington, and Staunton, Va., as well as Huntington, W.V., Petersburg, Va., and Burlington, Salisbury, Charlotte, Greenville, Smithfield, Eden and Asheboro, N.C. before retiring on January 31, 1997.  While serving in many of the appointments, he was involved in Jaycees, Rotary Club and Kiwanis, where he held several committee chairmanships. Major Ron Davis served as an active officer for over 43 years and, into his retirement, he was still active as a faithful soldier of the Charlotte Temple Corps for many years.

His beloved Betty was called to her heavenly home on September 5, 2015.

They are survived by six children, Ron Jr, Thomas, Deborah, Stanley, Lisa and Barry, and they have twelve grandchildren. They are also survived by sister Evelyn (Wesley) Mott and Lt. Colonel J.R. Jones & Major Carolyn Zuniga, as well as nephews, nieces, family members and many friends.
