The Salvation Army teams with community partners to ‘Do the Most Good’

Augusta, Georgia: Local dignitaries and The Salvation Army Augusta Command cut a ribbon in November to celebrate the official opening of the new Salvation Army Donation Center on Benchmark Drive. The 12,000-square-foot facility is a central receiving point for donated goods to be sorted and prepared for resale in local Family Stores. It replaces a processing operation in a former store; as a stand-alone facility, the center is intended to increase efficiencies and reduce costs. It handles clothes processing and baling, and has steel racks for long-term storage, an electronics testing area, and a drive-in truck bay. “This is a wonderful occasion for an institution in our community that’s so very, very important, especially as we’re coming up on a holiday,” said Sue Parr of the Augusta Metro Chamber of Commerce. The Donation Center, Parr said, “is going to be a very integral part of how they serve our community and how they accept your donation and give them to people they serve who are in need.”

Chattanooga, Tennessee: Students at McCallie School teamed up with The Salvation Army of Chattanooga to help provide Thanksgiving meals by delivering 75 food boxes to local families. Upper School students collected turkeys, while Middle School students gathered side items. They then helped load items into a Salvation Army truck so the boxes could be distributed before the holiday. “We’re proud of these guys for their servant leadership and spirit of giving,” the Chattanooga Area Command said in a Facebook posting.

Baltimore, Maryland: Volunteers from Macys and the 53 Families Foundation worked hard to assemble food boxes for a Thanksgiving food distribution by The Salvation Army of Central Maryland.

Charlotte, North Carolina: The Charlotte Knights minor league baseball team, in partnership with T-Mobile – the official sponsor of the "Pumpkin Patch at Truist Field" event – donated 250 pumpkins to the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Charlotte. Homer the Dragon, along with members of the Charlotte Knights front office staff, brought the pumpkin patch to the kids, stopping by the Belmont Avenue Club to paint pumpkins, dance and have a good time. The Knights, following the forced cancellation of the 2020 baseball season, have been very creative in a difficult environment. The team, committed to giving back to the community, has opened Truist Field in uptown Charlotte for unique – and safe – activities, from movie nights to the recent Pumpkin Patch event.

Knoxville, Tennessee: The Porsche Club of Knoxville donated more than 2,600 pounds of food to The Salvation Army and Knox Area Rescue Ministries for a pre-Thanksgiving “Stuff the Porsche” competition at Harper Porsche. The goal was to stuff each vehicle with as much weight in food as possible. In addition to non-perishables, the club donated 67 turkeys, 21 hams, and a generous cash gift of $2,150. “So much fun! We are grateful!” the Knoxville Corps posted to Facebook.

Clarksburg, West Virginia: Turkeys are on the way! Volunteers delivered turkeys to a local church that cooked them for The Salvation Army’s Community Thanksgiving Meal. “Thank you, Duff Street United Methodist Church, for helping us serve the Clarksburg community,” the Clarksburg Corps posted to Facebook.

Spartanburg, South Carolina: The Salvation Army Fall Festival was successfully and safely celebrated in early November. Due to the coronavirus, everyone had to have a temperature check and a face mask. A total of 250 people came out and enjoyed free food, games and music with their families. The Spartanburg Corps appreciates the efforts of its the volunteers and Spartanburg Rehabilitation Institute for their sponsorship of the festival.

Newnan, Georgia: “It's the season of giving and helping, and these awesome folks did just that!” The Salvation Army Service Center in Newnan posted to Facebook. “Scout Troop 219 prepared more than 30 Thanksgiving food boxes that will be given to grandparents raising grandchildren. We have a great community! Thank you for sharing the love.”

Kingsport, Tennessee: The Salvation Army thanks Vietnam Veterans Chapter 979 for ringing bells in November at the Walmart store on Fort Henry Drive.
