Transforming Lives at Camp Keystone: The Camp Success Sequence

Apr 21, 2025 | by Major Ethan Frizzell

“What they are doing is amazing,” said Arnold Simonson, a donor and great friend of The Salvation Army in Sarasota, Florida. “How many young people are working here?” The answer was 120—one hundred and twenty dedicated counselors and support staff creating a fun, safe, and learning- rich space at The Salvation Army’s Camp Keystone. A week following Mr. Simonson’s visit, a generous donation was entrusted to then Florida Divisional Youth Secretary Major Matt Satterlee, ensuring further investment in the team that powers this life-changing camp experience, as Mr. Simonson witnessed firsthand the transformative strength that camp can have in breaking the cycles of poverty.

At the heart of this transformation lies a concept known as the Success Sequence, a roadmap that illuminates a pathway out of poverty. Ian Rowe’s Success Sequence, widely discussed in his influential work “Agency,” outlines a series of critical life choices that pave the way to economic stability and personal fulfillment. This sequence encourages individuals to graduate from high school, secure full-time employment, and form stable family relationships, thereby laying the foundation for generational prosperity. By following these key steps, communities can begin to dismantle the cycles of hardship that have long persisted.

Camp Keystone has crafted its own unique adaptation of the Success Sequence—a rhythmic progression that encapsulates the transformative journey experienced by every participant. This local model, known as the Keystone Success Sequence, echoes a simple yet powerful refrain:

Community → Camper → Counselor → College → Career → Community Leader

This repetitive cycle is more than just a series of steps; it is a dynamic process of transformation. It begins with children facing significant challenges in their communities and guides them through the enriching experience of camp life. As campers grow and learn, they transition into counselors who, through hands-on leadership development, are empowered to take on greater responsibilities. Many of these counselors then pursue higher education, enter the workforce, and eventually give back to their communities as dynamic changemakers.

Detailed insights into this sequence can be found in the Keystone Success Sequence document, drafted by Salvation Army officers at Camp Keystone in the summer of 2024. These officers themselves are products of the Camp Success Sequence, which underscores its role as the bedrock of Camp Keystone’s success.

Generous support like that of Mr. Simonson not only displays and reinforces the community’s trust in the programs we provide but also fuels the momentum necessary to sustain these life-changing initiatives.

It is often said that camp changes lives, and at Camp Keystone, this adage rings especially true. Lt. Colonel Ann Penhale, Texas divisional leader for mission advancement and director of officer development, encapsulates this sentiment perfectly: “Camp ministry offers a two-fold opportunity. The first opportunity is for the staff who come to work – often as their first job – where they develop leadership skills that can ignite a lifetime of service. At camp, staff members learn to build relationships, work as a team, and, most importantly, learn about themselves.”

Her words remind us that every role at Camp Keystone, from camper to counselor, is an investment in the future—a future where every individual can rise to meet the challenges of tomorrow. Additional resources on successful camp ministry can be explored here.

Camp Keystone is not merely a place—it is a movement. It is a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared vision of transformation. With every challenge turned into opportunity, every child empowered to become a leader, and every counselor inspired to reach greater heights, the Keystone Success Sequence creates a ripple effect that extends far beyond the confines of the camp.

As we celebrate the many success stories born from this model, we invite community members, donors, and partners to join us in sustaining and expanding this transformative work. Together, we can ensure that the legacy of all our Salvation Army camps continues to flourish, lighting the way for future generations to experience the fullness of life through faith, community, and opportunity.
