Prayer Focus - Ghana Territory
Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park at night - Accra, Ghana
The Mighty One, God, the Lord,
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to where it sets.
From Zion, perfect in beauty,
God shines forth.
Our God comes
and will not be silent…
Psalm 50:1-3a
Prayer
Father, I ask for victory over envy and division in my life. Help me to recognize when jealousy is creeping in and to resist the temptation to compare myself with others. Fill my heart with peace, love, and humility, so that I may build up others rather than tear them down. I pray for unity and harmony in my relationships and for Your spirit of peace to reign in my heart. Thank You for Your grace in overcoming these challenges. Help me to always remember that if I am yielded and obedient to You, I can trust You with the answers I have, and with the path that is before me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
This is a march of witness from the Ghana Territory Centennial in 2022. You can see some of the street life as well as the pride of the Salvationists as they celebrate.
Background of the Ghana Territory
Ghana: Gaining its independence from Britain in 1957, its early history as an independent nation was turbulent until Jerry John Rawlings established a multi-party democracy that has since strengthened Ghana as a nation with peaceful elections and growing prosperity. It has been a role model of African diplomacy and peacekeeping.
Agriculture is the main industry, especially cocoa and timber, the latter receiving attention with more careful attention for replenishing the areas being deforested. The mining of gold and tourism as additional revenue sources, and Ghana is working on developing additional internal and diverse sources of income.
Ghana is a secular state with freedom of religion. Christianity is by far the leading religion, followed by Islam and then by traditional African beliefs. There is a rich Christian tradition in Ghana with a strong effort of reaching people with the gospel. This includes solid efforts of Bible translation and Scripture distribution. What is lacking is consistent church attendance which stands weekly at around 10%.
Togo: A German colony from 1884 – 1914, it then became a French colony until gaining its independence in 1960. Following years of political turbulence, it emerged into a time of relative political stability with Faure Gnassingbé serving his fourth term as president. In 2024, constitutional reform transformed the government from a presidential one to a parliamentary one that weakened the role of the president and greatly strengthened parliament and the role of the prime minister.
Togo’s economy is based largely on agriculture with its main exports being coffee, cocoa and cotton. Mining is also a major industry, with phosphate leading the way. Togo has the fourth largest phosphate deposits in the world.
After a time of religious restrictions, these were largely lifted in 1990 and there has been wide religious freedom since. Christianity has grown rapidly since then and is the largest single religion in Togo, followed by traditional African religions and a significant Muslim population.
The Salvation Army: Operations began in Ghana in 1922 when Lt. King Hudson was commissioned to “open fire” in his home town of Duakwa. Ensign and Mrs. Charles Roberts were also appointed to pioneer work in Accra. Work in neighboring Togo was officially recognized on April 1, 2011.

Something to Consider
“Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise…” Hebrews 13:15
God’s best gifts come quietly. No ear can hear their coming and so often no eye can behold them. They spring up like a tiny seed, sprouting newness of life, budding and flowering, and until they have throw off their scent in a changed life they are indiscernible.
A handicapped woman, moaning in her wheelchair, wished she had never been made. Someone suggested to her that she was not yet made, but was still in the process, and was quarreling with God’s processes. It was not easy for this woman, still in the prime of life, suddenly to have all strength taken from her legs.
“You know,” her visitor told her, “God never sends us trials, or puts us in any place, but there is a mission for us there, if we will open ourselves to His guidance. What a wonderful opportunity you have here as a Christian! Look around you. There are so many who do not ever know how to pray. Their souls are precious to the Lord. I’ll tell what we’ll do: let us pray that God will open a door of service for you here in this institution.”
When the woman yielded herself to Christ, a new process began to take place. Instead of thinking of her own helpless legs she saw people with legs and arms paralyzed, people living in darkness of mind, young people who would live a life on their backs. Then came the realization that she possessed a tremendous gift, the gift of faith in a Christ who was a master of circumstances.
No one noticed when the change took place but slowly, she began scattering seeds of hope that sprouted like a silent crop of flowers in a garden. Where before there had been bitterness and fretfulness, smiles began to appear. A few weeks later, with the help of a nurse, she took a few steps. Her excitement knew no bounds. A new interest in the life of others brought healing to her own body. She was sure that God’s ways are not always our ways, and that healing of mind and spirit was much more important than that of the body. She would thank Him and tell of His goodness so that all might know.

May God bless you as He teaches you that He can glorify Himself through you in all circumstances and lead you in the path you are treading. Amen.
The Salvation Army International Songsters bring us this arrangement of that old hymn that comforts us as it reminds us that “He Leadeth Me.”
