Winston-Salem Welcomes Majors Chuck and Julie Whiten As The New Area Commanders

Jul 21, 2025

The Salvation Army of Winston-Salem welcomes its new Area Commanders, Majors Chuck and Julie Whiten, the top local leaders responsible for overseeing both the ministry and operations of The Salvation Army across Forsyth, Davie, Stokes, and Yadkin counties. In this role, they will provide spiritual leadership, administrative oversight, and strategic direction for all programs and services offered by the organization in the Greater Winston-Salem area. They bring with them a renewed sense of purpose and vision for strengthening The Salvation Army’s impact throughout the Greater Winston-Salem community.

“We are thrilled to continue the ministry of The Salvation Army in Winston-Salem and look forward to getting to know the people who make up this wonderful community,” said Major Whiten. "Working alongside the dedicated employees, volunteers, donors, and community members who do so much for others is an honor. Your support and involvement are integral to our mission."

Prior to their appointment in Winston-Salem, Major Whiten served The Salvation Army in multiple states, including South Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. Their diverse experience has given them invaluable insights and experience to address the area's challenges.

As Area Commanders, Majors Chuck and Julie Whiten will oversee all aspects of The Salvation Army's mission in Winston-Salem, including worship services, church programs, and a wide range of social service efforts—from the Red Shield Youth Center and the Center of Hope shelter, to the Senior Center and vital assistance programs for rent, utilities, food, Christmas support, and disaster relief. Above all, what defines the Whitens is their deep passion for sharing the love of Jesus Christ and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those they serve.

“Meeting the spiritual and physical needs of others in the name of Jesus Christ is at the heart of everything we do,” said Major Chuck Whiten. “The Salvation Army is more than a service organization—it’s a church with a mission to offer hope, healing, and support to anyone in need. Whether someone needs a helping hand, a safe place, or simply someone to walk alongside them, The Salvation Army is committed to meeting the needs of this community—body, mind, and spirit.”

The Salvation Army’s Winston-Salem headquarters is located at the Center of Hope, 1255 North Trade Street, Winston-Salem. The organization invites residents to get involved through giving, volunteering, or simply attending a service.
