Through programs that serve the body, mind, and soul, we alleviate the symptoms of poverty, then work to address the root issues that cause it. This holistic approach helps create sustainable change in the lives of the families and individuals we serve in the greater Winston-Salem area, every single day.
Because housing insecurity is strongly linked to prolonged poverty, The Salvation Army Center of Hope provides the only family emergency homeless shelter in Forsyth County, offering safe refuge and the tools to make a fresh start to single mothers, single fathers, parents with children, and single women.
Many families must decide whether they will pay their bills or purchase food. They do not have sufficient funds to do both. That is why we operate two food pantries, one in downtown Winston-Salem at 1255 N. Trade St., and one in Kernersville, at 130 E. Mountain St. Our Winston pantry is open M-W-F from 8:30-10:00 AM and our Kernersville pantry is open M-T-Th from noon-2 PM. No appointments are necessary.
We help struggling families and individuals avoid falling into the cycle of crisis by supplementing their income with utility, rent, and other vital payments. Oftentimes, this assistance becomes the difference between shelter and eviction.
