Clifton Hills Elementary School Black History Month Celebration Summary
The Clifton Hills Elementary School Black History Month Celebration was a lively and engaging event filled with culture, community, and celebration. The atmosphere was vibrant and energetic, with music, performances, and local vendors contributing to the excitement. Vendors included Mary Kay, a jewelry seller, a sweets vendor, the Big Brother and Big Sisters Club, the Chattanooga Public Library, and the pop-up shop Rise.
Music and culture played a central role in the celebration. The event began with Sherry Davis as the host, sharing insights into African American cultural traditions. The celebration opened with a powerful rendition of the Black National Anthem, Lift Every Voice and Sing, followed by an inspiring African American ritual dance performed by students. This moving performance represented the struggles, challenges, and pain endured by the Black community, culminating in a triumphant rise—symbolizing resilience, unity, and joy.
The celebration was a true testament to the strength and togetherness of the community, leaving attendees inspired and uplifted.
After the performances, Eric and I had the opportunity to engage with the community and share information about the services The Salvation Army provides to those in need. I also had the chance to speak with Ms. Sherry Davis, the school’s speech therapist.
Since Clifton Hills Elementary School is predominantly Hispanic, I was particularly interested in getting Ms. Davis’s perspective on how the celebration aligned with both the school’s and The Salvation Army’s missions and values. She shared that the event was focused on educating students and the community about the history and struggles African Americans faced, while also emphasizing diversity, community engagement, the legacy of prominent Black leaders, and the importance of helping one another.
When it came to how the celebration aligned with The Salvation Army’s mission and values—let’s just say, for the first time that night, Sherry was speechless… lol!
So, I decided to step in and answer for Sherry. For me the celebration aligns with The Salvation Army’s mission and values by promoting diversity, inclusion, and community engagement. The Salvation Army is committed to serving all individuals with love, respect, and dignity, regardless of background. By participating in this celebration, The Salvation Army supports the recognition of Black history, culture, and contributions while fostering unity and empowerment within the community. Additionally, the event provides an opportunity to connect with individuals in need and raise awareness about available services, reinforcing the organization’s dedication to meeting human needs without discrimination.
Overall, I would say that the Black History Month Celebration at Clifton Hills Elementary School was a success for the students, teachers, community, and The Salvation Army.
