LOCAL CHILDREN HAVE EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT BECAUSE OF YOU
Any parent who once sat in a trigonometry class and thought “Well I’m never going to use this again” was thrown for a loop when these two words promoted them to “homeschool teacher” in the blink of an eye.
But parents’ struggles are just the tip of the iceberg. For many local children, virtual learning has created an unbearable amount of stress, confusion, and frustration. On top of the many technical difficulties that come with the virtual classroom, they miss seeing their friends on a regular basis.
As an organization that strives to meet the specific needs of our neighbors, The Salvation Army has quickly pivoted to provide support to young students who are struggling to keep up on school. Students like David.
“David Came To School This Morning Extremely Stressed Talking About Wanting To Drop His English Class,” Explains Our Staff Member. “Then A Volunteer Came In To Help. She’s Been Sitting With Him For Over Two Hours Helping Him Understand His Teacher And Make An Outline. He’s So Relieved.”
Salvation Army units that have historically offered after-school programming are working hard to extend hours, hire additional staff, and acquire PPE so they can open safely through the school day. These programs allow students like David to receive tutoring. Some even provide daycare for children of essential workers.
