The Salvation Army began its annual fundraiser with a team spirit competition. On Friday, volunteers representing Augusta University, University of Georgia, Georgia Southern University and the Marines set up kettles and rang their bells at the Washington Road Kroger in Augusta to see which team could raise the most money in a seven-hour window.

Although the UGA team had been the reigning champ for the past six years, a new winner emerged this year. According to a news release, AU raised $1,074, more than half of the total $1,903.58 raised.

"We appreciate the generosity of the community at the kickoff," Area Commander Philip Canning said. "We are off to a great start to our annual Christmas campaigns."
This year's local goal is $250,000. By now bells are ringing outside of shopping centers and large retail stores throughout Augusta and surrounding areas. Bells will continue ringing Mondays through Saturdays through Christmas Eve. Money raised in the kettles assists with local Salvation Army programs throughout the year.

Friday was also the kickoff for the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program, which provides gifts and clothing to about 700 children who might otherwise go without on Christmas. Those who are interested can choose an "angel" from a tree, purchase items for the child based on the information on the card and then return the item to a drop-off location by Dec. 2. Angels will be available the Augusta Mall near Santa, the Kroc Center, Subway locations or by contacting the Salvation Army at (706) 922-8330.

To sign up to be a bell ringer, call (706) 434-3185.
